Asparagus trimming/care

I had never planted asparagus prior to last year only to find out it takes 3 years to mature! I planted 3 inch seedlings which have now grown into 5 foot blooming shoots! It's awesome but I don't know if I should be pruning them? Or what? They are huge and it's only May help! how should I care for them this summer/year?

Leave them alone. They don't need pruning because they are herbaceous perennials. You are not trying to train a permanent structure. They need all that greenery to grow the roots which will eventually produce your asparagus spears. In the Autumn they will die off and you can cut the dead fern down. Next year up they'll pop again. Repeat for three years until you see thicker looking shoots and then start harvesting sparingly.

Agree. No pruning allowed. ;-) As for care, keep them well watered throughout the summer and if you didn't give them a good early spring feeding do so now and again in the fall.

Earlier posters correctly addressed the issue of not pruning the ferns since they are strengthening the roots for next year. However, looks like you have at least 3 plants within a pretty small area. Asparagus needs a good, fertile soil to do well, so be sure to top-dress it with a good couple of inches of compost after frost (which is when you can/should remove the dry,yellowed ferns) and on top of that add 4-6" of chopped or shredded leaves. This also will serve the important task of keeping out weeds. A generous sprinkling of blood meal in early spring would not be amiss, either, to give it the nitrogen this hungry green plant requires.

Our neighbor back home in Wisconsin had a full city lot of asparagus. After harvesting, they chopped it all to the ground and then mowed it all down. It came back year after year.

Yeah you can’t paint those. Like I said it doesn’t bother me, but if it bothers you I’m sure you can call and ask them. Can’t hurt! Unfortunately they are (usually) custom so you’d have to pay for the cost of another one unless you have a contract specifically stating they would match to trim exactly.
