Planting Privacy Shrubs under Pine Trees - Is it Possible?
Comments (4)There are actually quite a few to choose from for Northern Climates. Evergreens include many arborvitae but Techny 'Arborvitae'is the most shade tolerant. They really won't grow that much so buy the height you need and be sure to feed and water these ones. For Taxus you can include Hicks Yew, Capitata Yew, Cuspidata Yew, Taunton Yew. Although they are slow growing, they are tough as nails. Buy them as big as possible. Or try Canadian Hemlock but make sure you can keep the soil moist especially during the 1st month after planting. For Deciduous shrubs you could choose, Witchhazel, Redbud, Pagoda Dogwood, Winterberry, Viburnum Dentatum, Viburnum lantana, Viburnum lentago, Viburnum trilobum, Euonymous alatus 'Chicago Fire' or Tures, Kerria japonica, Northern Bayberry, Snowberry, Clethra, Gray Dogwood, Aronia Chokeberry and Amur maples. All of these will tolerate shade very well but will grow in a more open habit, have less flowers and less fall color. Plant in layers to create the desired screening. Comments (8)Maybe someone can help me out here . . . can dogwood take dry conditions at all? If so, if it were my house, I imagine I would plant a dogwood. There are many kinds. They look nice all the time, especially in winter when the red- or yellow-stemmed ones add some color in the whiteness. I know they can take shade, and maybe if they were mulched they could take dry as well? You can post photos (if you have them) by hosting them on Picasaweb or Photobucket and copying the text to embed the image (in Picasa it's called "embed imgage", I believe). Just in case you would like to....See MoreWhat tree or shrub should I plant here?
Comments (4)I was thinking like 10-15 ft tall and about 7 ft wide. Something that will fill in that area as a screen. I'll try posting on the shrub/tree forum later today if I can. Thanks!...See MoreShould I plant trees for privacy and risk angering neighbors?
Comments (83)It sounds like your neighbors are jerks, so you don't need to feel bad about doing what you want to your property because it won't affect your relationship w your neighbors. However, if you have pets, I would think hard before poking the bear because stories of pets being hurt in retaliation is all too common in these 'disputes'. I would never risk it because there are other solutions available. If you have no pets to worry about, then I'd do what you want to do. FWIW, I don't think it's weird for someone to realize their view may potentially go away and to start enjoying it more while they still can. Putting chairs outside one's home and facing them to the street is common everywhere and not creepy to most people. It's either done to enjoy views or to even see neighbors with the goal of being social. If facing views towards other properties and views wasn't acceptable, it would mean everyone who isn't ocean front in a beach town shouldn't have seating that faces the ocean because they would be looking through someone's property to view it. I get why you want your privacy though!!! It's really common for even very nice people to be upset about losing their views and and seeing changes to their neighborhood. Change is expected and it's tough luck, but those feelings are understandable....See Moreqi99
