Looking For Tango Mandarin In Texas
Comments (21)Clemenules and other mandarins can be strongly alternate bearing, so you'll have a heavy crop followed by a lighter crop, but the can really be covered. My California Honey mandarin is loaded right now, ridiculously so. I'll have to take a photo of it, because it's from Four Winds, if it's 2 feet tall I'd be shocked, and there's probaby 40 fruit on it. It is strongly alternate bearing, so I'll probably have just a handful next year. And yes, the Seedless Kishu is worth having because it probably has the richest, most complex and sweet flavor of any mandarin I've had. I love them. And, I have the very good fortunate a few years ago, to be able to cruise up to Halifax, NS. It was so beautiful, I could easily live there. Really enjoyed myself, it was a wonderful cruise. Just sad that I did not get to make up to Cape Breton, I would really have enjoyed that. Patty S....See MoreShasta Gold, Sumo, Mandarins, oh my!
Comments (29)Last week I found Shasta gold and sumos at Shoprite. Today I saw ruby tangos and golden nuggets in Walmart. The GNs didn’t look great, hard and pale. The ruby tangos looked beautiful, but they were expensive and I didn’t want to buy a whole box. I’m really impressed by how much variety there in mass market mandarains. So many more choices beyond cuties and halos. Still not as good as growing your own......See MoreWhat does your ultimate citrus collection looks like?
Comments (35)Best tasting (in my personal opinion, which is very subjective) Mandarins: Satsuma (from a mature tree, takes years to develop full flavor) closely followed by Shasta Gold and Kishu Some people also really love Page (the aroma reminds me of pine needles, not in a bad way) Minneola Tangelos are of course a classic For oranges, Valencia is the one and only (if grown in a warm climate, because in cooler climates it may not develop full flavor and sweetness) Grapefruits: Duncan has "classic grapefruit flavor", the gold standard by which to measure grapefruit flavor (but is a bit seedy, and some people complain of grapefruit bitterness) Oroblanco is sort of like a milder version of Duncan, less bitterness, but a tiny bit less aroma also, still a great one. It's sweet, and even many people who don't care for grapefruits still think Oroblanco is okay....See MoreHype on Gold Nugget mandarin?
Comments (23)One of the minor advantages of Gold Nugget, I believe it's supposed to have more cold hardiness than other mandarins. Almost as hardy, or perhaps equal to Satsuma. So it may be a more appropriate choice for those in more borderline areas. Of course, it is possible there could be other mandarins that show an increased level of hardiness but just were never specifically tested for that. We're probably not talking a huge degree of difference, but minor differences in hardiness can make all the difference in some situations. I personally would always go with Satsuma, but if you're in one of those situations and looking for some variety, or you don't want to have to wait too many years for the fruits to develop a higher flavor level (a particular trait of Satsuma), then Gold Nugget would be an option....See MoreVladimir (Zone 5b Massachusetts)
