One of the main stems of my dahlia broke (almost completely through, but not ) right at the bottom, just off of the ground. We had a storm and it was windy and of course I hadn't staked it, and when I looked out the window once the storm had passed I saw my beauty bending awkwardly toward the ground.

Here are ome pictures I took not only for your reference, but also that you can see it in its glory and share in my agony. My finger points to the location of the break. I staked it after the fact, typically... Should I break it off completely or might it mend itself? And, lastly, it won't kill the entire plant, right? but also that you can see it in its glory and share in my agony. My finger points to the location of the break. Any advice from a pro would be greatly appreciated!
