If it were mine I'd leave the top alone. More to the point at this stage is did you do anything about the presumably deformed roots when you planted it? If not it may topple over or girdle itself later - it already looks like it has a lean near the base.

Then there is the matter of this cultivar not being a dwarf. For example one at the Seattle (USDA 8) arboretum was 60 ft. tall in 2005 or so. If it's the same very visibly situated example right off Arboretum Drive its lower crown wouldn't begin to fit in the space you have planted yours in.

Thanks for your response. I'm not looking to prune the top but am wondering about the branches coming up the sides from the base. Is this supposed to be a single trunk tree? Are those two branches growing along side of the trunk a leader situation?

Overall the tree visually seems to be straight upright but in the pictures I see what you mean; is that a sign of girdling already or is the main trunk slightly curved?

When planting I don't recall specifically what the root ball was like. I did the four cuts down the sides of the root ball and a cross on the bottom and soaked the ball to tease out the roots. I'm struggling to recall but it seems I pruned off the worst of the deformed roots.

60 feet? I hope it took a long time to reach that height! My tree isn't under an overhang and I'm not emotionally attached to it. I don't mind replacing it if I'm still here when it gets too big.

Yes, I understood what you said. I wouldn't cut them out. The curve near the base I take to be an indication of leaning over on inadequate roots at some point. But you did process the roots at planting, to try and make up for the compaction produced by the container. After establishment it may grow nearly 12 inches per year in height, with a commensurate width. So it could be approaching 10 ft. taller than it is now in maybe 12 years. And so on, through the years.
