Newly planted tree dying

I recently planted a Japanese Flowering Kwanza and it appears that the top half has died. It has new growth on the bottom that has grown atleast half as tall as the tree is. What do I need to do to make sure I can at least save the tree.

If your 'Kanzan' Japanese flowering tree cherry was a high graft, with the 'Kanzan' part perched on top of a long section of sweet cherry (Prunus avium) trunk - which is often the case - then it sounds like you may have lost the 'Kanzan' scion entirely and the sweet cherry stock has sent up shoots of its own. If this is determined to be what happened then the whole specimen should be removed and replaced, as the stock is not going to produce the flowers and growth you originally wanted. And sweet cherry, despite the frequent planting of it for orchard or home fruit production is actually quite a weed in suitable climate areas. Such as mine.

And has other issues such as pest and disease susceptibility, nuisance surface rooting, and spreading underground to form groves.

add location while you are at it ... any chance of cold damage since planting ????

The only thing I can suggest is to lift the plant and inspect the root ball- it is possible that it was pot bound and you didn't separate the roots enough to be able to wet the rootball thoroughly when you water. Water will not penetrate "ball o' roots" and no matter how much you water the plant will dry out. It's also possible that this one was planted too deeply or settled more deeply than the others. It is possible that masonry containers have leached into the soil and made your pH too high. Why just the one? I dunno. A pH test would rule it out. It is possible that someone dumped a vendi latte on it- who knows. A photo would be helpful. All you can do is ensure that it is planted properly and take care of it. FWIW I would never ever feed a plant that was not actively growing. If it was me I'd snag another PJM as backup... What sort of tree is it planted with?

Gsracer, I love your coconut trees against the pretty wood fence. The landscaping you've made along the fence looks neat and nice too. I'm a little colder here for coconuts, but still I'm not giving it up yet. I bought one from Home Depot, but it's about 5ft or so .. no trunk yet. I'd like to get a bigger one with trunk to start planting this growing season. If you don't mind, could you provide the name of the seller in Homestead so I can look them up. I'd greatly appreciate it. You certainly can look forward to having lots of coconuts soon. In the mean time, I hope you'll feed them with whatever nutrients they need to help them grow quick and fast in order to reach maturity and fruit production stage. Have fun with your cocos!

Help! All my plants are dying in the newly raised garden bed.

I bought Miraclegro garden soil and mixed it with regular organic garden soil and humus mixture. I watered them once everyday on days we did not have rains. I watered them by hand with a garden hose and shower head attachment. We have a large yard so I spent about 20 minutes watering all the plants. The plants in the other raised beds are doing ok except for the pepper plants which have died en masse. Is the soil height too low for these plants? I put in soaked cardboard under these raised beds, 1 layer of mulch[about an inch] before putting in the soil and the plants finally. Now I notice that all my tomato & basil plants are drying out and dying despite the copious rains we have had. Am going crazy!

Replace the dead trees, 15 dead out of 65 planted is not great, but not the worst either. The soil may be too rich for conifers, try ordinary native soil for the replacement trees, don't disturb the other trees that have taken. Moreover, don't fertilize new transplants, it would have the undesired effect of stimulating the growth of foliage, whereas they should instead grow the roots they lost when they were dug up. Note that these large transplants have to continue their lives with as little as 5% of their roots. Good luck!

btw .. define 'newly planted' .. trees dont usually die all that fast ... but if it was significantly stressed.. it could shed leaves.. but if properly watered.. it should releaf ..

so it might not be dead ...

but if it were.. i would wonder about the quality of the stock ... if it died all that fast ... and you would have to talk to your seller about that ...

It was planted 2 months ago and everything else was done properly. I live in North Georgia. What if anything can be done?

Can you post any photos so we can see exactly what is going on? If the topgrowth (scion) has died off, leaving only the graft (rootstock) alive, there isn't much point in saving the tree - it is NOT what you purchased and will not bloom like the Kanzan.

Is the tree under any sort of nursery warranty?
