fishbabe: Get yourself some copper pipe at Home Depot or your local hardware store. Choose the size of diameter you want and get yourself some really strong side brackets. Spray paint your pipes any color you want and get on with your decorating. That's my secret and it saved me about $700.00 in hardware (but that was when copper was a lot cheaper). You need to keep your rods one piece (the sliding two piece rods are weaker and in my opinion a problem when hanging fabric). If you really want wood, have it cut to your dimensions to make sure it will fit your grommets and your brackets and your end caps. Good luck and post pictures! Mount either 1 or 2 curtain rods about 6" above the window (all the same height). Get curtains that go all the way to the floor and are twice as wide as the length of the rod. The rod should also be about 6" wider than the window and/or door. You can use multiple curtains to get the correct width. Personally I'd do one long rod if you can find one, and have 1+ curtain that rests in between door and window, as well as 1+ on each of the outsides.

For a transitional style room with sliding doors I'd do floor length curtain panels on each side, hung on a rod located half way between the door molding and the ceiling.

I would put the rod to be even with the top of the cabinet.
