Do you deadhead your clematis?
Comments (9)Easier than deadheading is to cut the clematis back by half after flowering, keep it well watered and fertilized, and you will likely be rewarded with a second bloom flush as large as the first in late summer/early spring. Whether this will work on type IIs or not will depend on the length of your growing season but it works for me here in NC zone 7a for type IIs. Type IIIs do so with no issue....See MoreHow to deadhead roses.
Comments (10)Every time I walk thru my rose garden, I use my fingers to snap off any spent blooms right underneath the base of the bloom. Then every 3-4 weeks, I go thru the roses with a pruner cleaning out what you call the spikes & doing any general reshaping of the bush. Cutting back to the 5 leaflet leaf is something you want to do if you are a rose exhibitor or growing roses for cut flowers, but if you are like most rose growers, you just want a bunch of roses on your bush & once in a while to cut some for the house thus cutting back to the 5 leaflet is not as important....See MoreMy Madame Anisette rose. Comments (40)Try writing Pat Henry at Roses Unlimited -- she had MA listed earlier. I do understand your concerns @ this rose. I too tried Summer Romance. Both SR and MA display what I call "Over-ploidy" problems. That's my made-up word for plants that have been bred to be triploids or tetraploids, and sometimes the genes just seem to "lump" together. The slow-to-establish growth pattern seems to be a part of this too. However, your conditions in Texas will be much different than mine -- someone here on Houzz is growing MA in California with outstanding results -- other than having a lot of height (I wish!)....See MoreHow do I deadhead Cinco de Mayo roses?
Comments (7)i bet.. if done in the right spot.. you can remove a dozen or more hips in one cut.. rather than individually ... you just have to learn the spot.. and have faith when you cut off big gobs.. that it will rebud from below your cut .. and hopefully reflower this season .. pruning rarely kills an otherwise healthy plant ... so have no fear that way ... the trick is.. to encourage more bloom.. sooner .... rather than later.. or next year ... ken...See MoreCori Ann - H0uzz violated my privacy
