Royal Colors where are you?
Comments (12)THanks, Jodi! And yes, I do deserve it, LOL. It has been a tough year but it is getting better all the time now. I have set out 16 rose bushes in the last 2 days and today's 6 had to have the weeds dug up and removed first and compost hauled. My arms and hands are aching but OH the joy when they bloom! Today's roses are Freelander roses from Palatine, the roses Kordes has designated as outdoor florist roses. I have been collecting them now for 3 years and just love them! I think I now have all that Palatine carries except Red Queen (thought I had ordered it!) and the pink ones which no one will buy at my stand. Funny, no one will buy pink but I can not seem to get enough orange things out to meet the demand....but that was this year! Anyhow, the Freelanders last 8-12 days in the vase and even have some fregrance. My favorite ones so far are IceGirl (white) and Queen of Hearts (Orangy red with apricot center). The neat thing about working today was that I found I could do the whole job without asking my hubby for help! Big change from last year! I even got the buckets of compost from the pile and dumped them on myself this year. I have made so much progress since my knees healed from surgery that, inspite of the spinal and hand arthritis I am able to do more then I have for years! (good thing too because things were really getting out of hand!) Jodi, I wish they would find a miracle medicine for your Lupus so you could experience this too! Today we booked our adventures for the cruise. Snorkeling in Chilleno Bay, a hike through the jungle with swimming in sand bottomed river pools, and a bird watching in a mangrove swamp adventure that ends with beach swimming and a naturalist explaining the sea turtle rescue project. Yeh, I will remember you all...and laugh, joyously! But yes, I will take photos to share. It will make it more fun taking them knowing I will be sharing them. Usually I take my camera and forget to take photos. I will also focus on any horticultural treasures in our journey. My evergreen is finishing its 2nd stalk flowers. It had 6 lovely flowers on its tall stem. I like this one! I have a mystery one from last year about to bloom and am watching it closely. The Angeliques from McCLure and Zimmerman will let us know whether they are true to name very soon also. Big fat buds growing taller every day! THe outdoor light fades but the flowers grow and glow and light our days inside!...See MoreJournal for the rest of June
Comments (30)I'm struggleing to keep things alive. HOT and DROUGHT! 'nuff said? I planted 30 Pro Cut Orange seedlings on Friday. Each was 8-10 inches tall. Came back Sunday and they were GONE! Don't know if it was rabbits or grasshoppers. It's things like that that make me wonder if I'm the ONLY person in Texas (the WORLD!?!) who can't get sunflowers to grow! I have a few more trays of various suns/zinnias/ misc. others in progress, but I'm VERY scared to plant them in the field. It's very discouraging--I may have to camp out there every night and say "Shoo!" to anything that moves! Have found the hoops & fabric & staples to make some row covers, just haven't had time to set them up. Hopefully if I DO get them set up, I'll have some protection from varmints. I ran into a friend at Walmart Sunday afternoon; she asked if I had any flowers NOW, as in That afternoon! Told her I had a few sunflowers (from a successful planting in late March). She was having friends over for dinner Sunday night, owned a neat blue pitcher, so out she came and bought all 8 I had laft! Hooray! A RETAIL sale! That was fun! And fun, just standing in the field, cutting, and then handing them to her right then. We decided to let her take them home and put them in water there instead of trying to juggle buckets and water from the field. She was going straight home in AC car anyway. My boss at the nursery decided that this would be the year to grow vegies as fresh produce to sell at the nursery. So he's got this (seems huge to me) area of vegies in progress out back. One of the staff chores is "getting" to harvest said vegies every morning. Today was MY turn! I had to work a whole HOUR! Boyohboy, do I have new respect for the millions (?) of farm workers out there--and the whole American Food Chain! And you cut flower growers who also grow and harvest your own vegies for market. BOY am I SUCH a City Girl! LOL! I've had to stoop over some for my meager flowers on occassion, but not so far, in the kind of heat we have right now, and not through scratchy leaved zuchinni & squash plants! Dang! New subject: Kim, could you repost the Calla link? When I clicked on it it said the page wasn't found or something like that. Thanks. That's all for now. Comments (18)No Barbra! It's supposed to be a hidden garden, unlike mine. BUT after I get the vines growing on my front fence and the side fences are privacy fences since my neighbors don't like my dogs, I will have a hidden garden. I don't like them (the neighbors) either, but then that is another story. And I've planted 3 vetivers right behind my front fence, and I have another one to plant, so within a year or two I will have a hidden garden. In the meantime, I'm just one of the Hummer Homes. And Barbra, you might want to consider some vetiver to put on your fence side so you don't have to see your neighbor. But I do thank him for my baby Mocha. Call next time you are in town. I'll be traveling some, and then in February I'm flying to Hawaii to spend a week with Stacy. Shawn gets back from Iraq around March 5 to 10, so I'll go out and visit with her and the baby. Shawn will be gone for 15 months by the first of March. See you soon, and hope to meet Pam. ALSO, our MG Plant Sale is March 14 so mark your calendar. Later. Comments (15)Now I'm fit to be tied. My contractor just called me to say that on the Vanguard ordering system, he can't order grids to match the new royal brown exterior color. He confirmed that the new exterior colors aren't available in grids. I originally hadn't contemplated grids, but the single prairie style really grew on me and we decided to put them in the four picture windows. I ended up thinking that would look really nice. Now I either have to change the exterior color (none of the others work for me at all) or forego the grids all together. I just went to the Soft-Lite site to try to see what i can get and started a chat. It seems like I can get the combination I want, though I loath having to start again. They're going to contact my contractor. But, my question here is this. Are the Soft-Lite Elements comparable to the Vanguard? Any pros or cons to the Elements? Should I expect them to be similar in price? Anything else you can tell me about the Soft-Lite windows? I've not investigated them much....See Moremoonie_57 (8 NC)
