It looks like you have brown tones in your countertops. I would not do any grays. You could possibly go with one of the greigs.....but darker grays do not work with browns even though EVERYONE is trying to make it work.

i just finished looking at some homes that have come on the market. Some people " update" before listing by painting every room GRAY. They often look terrible because the grays do not work with everything. I don't get it.

Those little samples you've painted on the walls aren't gonna tell you anything. Get some white poster board or foam board, paint samples on those, and move them around in the room at different times of day or night.

Here is a pretty true gray and a greige. You need to stay in the warm toned grays here.

P.S. I would also remove that chair rail, or at least paint it the same color as the walls. It's a detail that half wall doesn't need.

I usually like color but I think your space would look good in off white.

From that previous link, I found the BM Smoke Embers palette. Maybe the Smoke Embers as the primary with the Deep Caviar as an Accent.

Do you have a lot of natural light in this space? Smoke Embers,with an LRV in the 50's, would be quite dark if you don't. It would also be too grey for me in that space but you sound determined to go in that direction. Deep Caviar to accent where? Depending on the light,it will read purple-ish,dark brown or charcoal.

So.. I actually don't have a ton of Natural Light.. This is where I run into issues. I see something on the screen and assume that is how it translates. So perhaps I should be aiming a lot lighter. The off white suggestion or something along those lines?

In my head I've always ben worried about white because I get this whole "freshly moved in apartment vibe" in my head. But maybe the browns I have in my cabinetry and fireplace provide the color I need?

It's like the "Yanny vs Laurel" debate we see and hear differently. I prefer the greige posted above. I don't see gray as relating to your counters and furniture.

Understood,a lot of whites can read like that. Cheap and chalky. If I were you,I'd start by looking for colours in the warm greige range with an LRV in the 70's. (a point or two one side or the other won't matter) See if that gets you where you want to go or if they are too deep for your needs. Daniel, every color will read differently in your room than it will on the chip. That's why it's crucial that you paint samples on boards and bring them into the space. Color will be affected by the amount of light you have as well as by everything around it: the flooring, the furnishings, the counters.

I am going to buy the board as you mentioned. I have come up with a couple colors now from all this discussion. Thanks for the idea regarding the board (wish I would have known about that before swatching up my walls ;) .

Personally I don't care for gray walls when the flooring is also grayish- seems like too much gray. I really like good old white walls- a fresh, clean white that will work with nearly everything.

Here are some greige colors to consider. I think matching your rug might be the color to consider.

However, before you paint I would address the lighting in the room. Using the lighting from the ceiling fans will keep your space from being spectacular. Is there anyway to add downlights or beams to the ceiling to hide an electrical supply?
