That should be enough sun for the veggies you mentioned. Actually a bit of shade in the hot afternoon after a sunny day is beneficial for plants esp in August. Does the area get sunlight from sunup in the summer? If so, maybe it will get a bit more than 6 hours, perhaps as much as 8, in which case they will do fine.

While those of us in cooler climates may still have tomatoes when your first set of plants have stopped producing, you have the advantage of a longer growing season and two crops to our one. ...make a small covering over the garden with clear visqueen... If you wish to provide some shade or filter the sun for your plants, I would recommend shade cloth instead of visqueen. It is porous and will allow air and rain to pass through it. It comes in a variety of percentages, or the amount of sun it blocks. 30% will block about one third of the light hitting it, while 50% will block about half and so on. I have a piece of knitted shade cloth that is about 5 years old now (average life is approximately 7 - 10 years) that I use to shade my transplants each year. In my experience, the sunburn has never been horribly disfiguring, and the next year's new growth tends to cover it up. I don't see anything wrong with seeing how well your plants handle the sun and then trying an intervention if sunburn is a big problem. Your individual landscape situation will dictate your options. For example, my Tom Thumb Gold was planted in a bed near the street four years ago. Like you (coniferbros, that is), I didn't view a shade cloth as an acceptable aesthetic option in that location, and I was willing to suffer some burn. In the end, I think I made the right decision, but I've made just as many (or more!) wrong decisions when it comes to gardening in general...

Sounds like you should be fine considering the number of hours of sun they'd receive from May to August. As for after that, I'd say if your tree is in full sun up until 4 pm, such would be fine. I know folks that have tall spruce trees that cast shadow on their fruit trees in the later afternoon and the sweetness and quality of fruit is not hindered.
