Paint dining table colour or not?

I have a maple table that I bought from a charity shop. My home is very neutural. I've just added blues and blush pinks to the living room. I'm thinking of painting the table legs BM Philipsburg blue with Chantilly lace top or vice versa. Or is it better just to stain the table, chantilly lace legs and add blue chairs. Looking for advice. Also not set on the colour, open to advice. My husband says I have an aversion to anything with colour, so I need help adding some!

What very neutral cour is your home? White, grey, beige, brown, black? The colour you choose for your table should flow nicely with the rest of the home :) A pic of the table would be good too!

In general I don't think dining tables with DIY painted tops stand up well. Of course there will be exceptions, but I know a few people who are dealing with tops that are wearing like crazy; the paint wears off after so many daily washings. In addition to that, painting it a colour locks you into that colour for the life of the table, unless of course you want to repaint. I don't know that a major piece of furniture is the best place to branch out into a newfound love of colour!

What if you leave the table as is or paint only the base in a neutral that suits your home and add colour with a rug, centerpiece, and art?

Thanks very much for your opinion. I think that's probably a better idea. I went very neutral with all my big pieces of furniture and now trying to add colour. My sectional is charcoal, armchair silver, I have BM revere pewter walls. Just bought a dark teal and grey area rug from Urban Barn, and blue and blush accent cushions.

Thanks for your advice. I have a 4 year old and 1 year old so good to know that the paint doesn't stand up well.

Sand all the old finishes enough to scuff the surfaces. Fill and sand smooth any holes,dings, etc. and clean off any dust. Primer---spray will give a smoother finish---no brush marks. If you wish to antique the finish, use a brush, tho. Zinsser makes a spray primer, btw. Spraying should give you a smoother finish---if done properly. Three or four light coats with plenty of dry time between coats. Gloss or semigloss is best for long lasting finishes----cleans much more easily.

painted hutch with stained dining table?

I am looking for a corner piece because the space I have is pretty small and I think the room will look better if I remove the hutch I currently am using, besides the fact that the current hutch is not the right color to match my grandmother's set. I don't think I want to paint the current hutch and I like the built in look of the painted corner hutch. I thought about the pediment piece maybe making it a little too tall also; the seller told me it measured 85" tall and it should just make it. I wonder if the pediment can be removed? I really like the arched door, but I also found yet another corner hutch locally that is a little simpler. Not sure it goes with my stuff either though. Thoughts?

Lol, I'm pretty sure that royandamanda might have thought you guys are probably joking considering the date. But, I gotta be honest with you, Patricia is 100% right- it's cramping up the room space. I would hate to eat at that dining table such that I'd prefer the couch anyday; they can't be positioned too close to the walls fyi. Why don't you try something smaller like one of these dining room furniture sets? It looks neat and would occupy the right space for your place.

Are you going to paint the grandfather clock too? Don't be so quick to create a monotone room. I would darken the coffee table top with a gel stain so it works with the darker end tables and clock. HERE is how one person did it. I might also darken the dining chairs. I'm confused as to how the end tables have the perfect width, but you want them to look larger! Perhaps you are overthinking the design. It looks balanced to me. Live with it for a while.
