Hi rockli - Narcissus is the formal name for daffodils of any sort. If you have planted your daffodil bulbs in containers, and you want the bulbs to produce flowers again next year, then feeding them once the flowers have finished is a good idea. When you buy them the flowers have already formed inside the bulb - so the information you have - just water them - will work. For one or two seasons - depending on how rich your potting mix is with any added slow-release fertiliser. And, to go with the water - make sure they have generous drain holes in the container or they will drown and die. They need air at their roots as well as water. And NO water crystals. They keep the mix too wet.

I was so concerned about the cuttings rotting and turning to mush that I am potting them up as soon as the white nubbies look swollen enough, and not waiting until they have actual roots. Is this okay? I just don't want to have another one turn to mush. I still have some in water as they either haven't developed nubbies or the nubbies aren't big enough yet. I am changing the water daily and keeping an eye on them. One cutting is fairly green and although it looks nice and healthy, it isn't even developing any white nubs. Would you pot this up in soil right away or wait to see nubs? Is it okay that even though the potted ones don't have actual roots right now, I shouldn't water too much and should keep them fairly dry? I potted the first ones on Saturday and haven't watered them since. I did give them a good soak when I first potted them and haven't let them stand with water in the container underneath the pots, so they are well drained. I am not a new gardener, just new to brugs and I feel like a nervous new mother. :) I hope one day to have enough cuttings that I will be making up a bubbler too. It sure seems like a better way to hold over cuttings especially if you don't have much room inside to have them all potted up. Thanks again for your help so far, Lois

I think that in most cases the reasons for 1or 2 size up rlue of thumb is based more on watering issues than too much grwoth without blooms ( I won't swear by it but I have done so many other plants that bloom in over sized pots and had not loss of blooming action:). I continue to here this about bougainvillas but have never heard it said about hibiscus. Hibiscus do resent wet feet but do love to be moist and not water stressed. Aborted blooms are frequent in these situations. I don't give my containered hibiscus all day sun in the summer because drying and bloom aborting happens too much at 100 degrees in July and August. I am potting up some one gallon hibs today and doing them in 3 to 4 gallon size plastic containers and then will double pot them in some cool mexican pottery for cooling, weight and display reasons. I look to grow my hibs in a pot size that allows for me working full time and not wanting to set up auto drips to keep them moist in summer and still small enough to not take too much room in the house for the winter. It can get to be a jungle in my living room as is and I am trying to not have so much clutter (plants good clutter:) over the winter months. SO this is my style to accomplish my goals and still have the hibs happy. All container growing is a balance of what the plant and person tending to it wants out of the relationship and making reasonable compromises to attain those goals. Sounds a little like marriage doesn't it and maybe it is more than we realize. I love my plants and I love my wife and I seek that compromise that keeps them both happy and me not feeling like growing them is a chore but a joy to behold just like I feel about life with my wife. Hope some of this makes sense and helps you decide what you will do. One more thought is that windy and conditions are tough on blooms and we are back to wateing and keeping your hibs happy so whatever you feel will do this is what you should do. Better a few less but spectacular blooms than more blooms but constantly seeing them shredded before you really enjoy them. Happy Growing whatever you decide. David

Sandra, Congratulations on rooting your rose! That's a very nice cutting you have. I hope this is the beginning of many more successes for you. If this was my rose, I would leave it in its current container until it shows realy nice root growth ... enough to hold the root ball together during transplanting. Then you can repot it in the container of your choice, or directly into the garden if the weather is moderate enough. Connie
