when to pot up cuttings

This week I received some cuttings from a very generous member (thank you! :)), but now I am concerned about the timing of when to pot them up. When they arrived, some of them already had large white nubs on the stems and some didn't. I put them in water, but wondered if it would be better to put the ones with the white nubs on the stems right into some potting soil. I am concerned right now as I already lost one of cuttings.....the very next day it started to rot from the bottom of the stem and when I tried to cut off the bottom of the stem that was mushy, it was actually mushy most of the way up.

I just wanted to know what method the experienced members prefer...water or right into soil? I know that the water method seems to be the most favoured, but are there some that use the soil method mostly?

I don't want to lose anymore, but I also don't want to keep taking them out of the water to feel them to see if they are still firm....I'm sure that isn't good for them :)
