I don’t mess around with hail because it can be very destructive. In just seconds your plants can go from pretty to ugly. Plus the ice gets stuck on certain parts of the plants. My agavoides ‘Ebony’ one year got hail stuck in its tight little crevices, I didn’t notice the stuck hail, and two weeks later the plant began to rot. Luckily I was able to save it, but it took three years for the Ebony to to look good again and to gain its size back.

Luckily I only have to worry about my plants during the winter. So let’s say I know the weather is going to be bad I will move everything to a protected area and cover with a tarp the things I can’t move.

Exactly, Kara. Ohh that poor agavoides ‘Ebony’, glad it has regrown for you. Good to hear that I'm not the only one, I just wondered if I was being overprotective. It's just we spend so much time growing our plants and them in an instant hail can damage them horribly. I moved the majority of the plants in, just the big Christmas Cacti are in a corner that should offer some protection.

Just checked our weather forecast and we have a tornado watch until 9:00 p.m. so I roped my sons into helping me move plants back in. Left a couple or rosemary plants and a bay outside.

I will move my plants around depending on the weather, it's usually wind that I have to worry about or if it is going to be really rainy I will shelter them.

Yep, if you are in the enhanced or moderate risk zones, I would move 'em all inside. Potential for 80mph straight line winds and strong tornadoes... We had our severe weather yesterday. A bit of hail, but it wasn't too bad.

My collection comes inside for heavy storms. Not worth losing or damaging plants. It can take years or more to out-grow damaged leaves!

A couple cheaper and more common plants can stay outside and risk it...

Hail is extremely rare here, but we did have it once, and it destroyed my collection of lithops. I have not replaced them. They also do not like excessive water, and so they need to be protected if it rains too much - also rare here. Most of my succulents are planted in the ground (except for epiphyllym, which need hanging or elevated pots), and so they are on their own. My climate is similar to that of South Africa, and so I have a lot of South African succulents. I don't have many cacti, but most of them are in pots so that I can move them around if necessary, but they never come inside.

Thank you everyone for what you do for your plants during the bad storms. It ended up being heavy rain and some wind, the neighboring town got the hail instead.

I was thinking about you this morning. I saw some damaged greenhouses and smashed pots on facebook and thought the winds must have been nasty. Glad to hear you fared well.

Thanks Crenda for thinking of me. I've been seeing a lot of downed trees and smashed windows on the news and fb.

It turns out there were 2 tornadoes confirmed in Connecticut, 4 in New York. (I live near the CT border)

Severe weather? What´s that ?

Fortunately, the tornadoes missed us (I'm in CT). There were also reports of hail as large as softballs elsewhere in the state. We just had thunderstorms and heavy rain.
