Ugly blooms on Blush Veranda.
Comments (10)Blush Veranda is a very double rose. It's color begins as that darkish pink and fades with heat, light and age as it opens and matures. What you're showing in that photo above is the natural look of that kind of flower. If your sister in law's flowers appear different from that, I would suspect her conditions are hotter and brighter than where yours are planted. I understand you find it unattractive, but what you're showing is completely healthy and natural appearing. It's an immature flower which should, provided enough heat and sun, mature into a more fully expanded bloom. The image I likned to below shows the center you show, and how the petals fade with age, heat and light. The hotter, drier and brighter the conditions in which they open, the lighter, paler the petals become, faster. Cooler, less brilliant and damper conditions will keep it pinker, less blush and lengthen the period the centers will remain as you've pictured. It's the only way that flower can be formed. There are many petals with the inner ones of much shorter length than the outer petals. The "eaten out center" is just how the flower is formed. Many larger flowered, heavily petaled flowers like the Romanticas, Austins and quite a few of the other breeders' roses, including Kordes, have that same look. It matures faster with more heat. How does her garden compare to yours heat and sun wise? Kim Here is a link that might be useful: Image of Blush Veranda...See MoreKordes Veranda
Comments (1)Thank you, topsiebeezelbub, for informing us of a great deal. I checked HMF for Kordes Veranda, and people raved about it also, see below: "Initial post 8 SEP 10 by Kona "This rose is the healthiest rose in my friend's rose garden...never an imperfect leaf and floriferous flushes. Carefree, beautiful shiney foliage and bushy to the ground. I just ordered one for my garden."...See MoreNewflora Kordes roses - let's rate them to provide feedback
Comments (185)Flowersaremusic I agree with you on above climate ect. Mine was nine years old and had not been nearly as beautiful as usual for the last 2 maybe 3 years. I decided to dig it up at the end of this year and replace it. Is was full of disease with very small flowers. while digging part of the crown broke off. I reached down and pushed on more of the crown that part broke off. No wonder the poor rose was looking poorly as the crown was in decay. I could also see that it was grafted since I plant those on a angle. In my wetter environment and needing to bury grafts that the grafted area eventually rots away and effects the crown. Could also be affected by below zero weather. I'm also considering applying more fertilizer. Sort of thinking that some continuous bloom roses could use more than what I give them. Felt so bad taking out the old rose. Happy now that it is done and a fresh new beauty will be coming....See MoreKordes Jolie Veranda vs Brothers Grimm vs Queen of Hearts
Comments (6)Great pictures, and I agree with all the comments so far. Jolie Veranda is pretty short and tends to be the least orange of the three. It's very hardy and disease resistant by report, and I expect it to live up to that. I've had the other two several years and I SOOO agree with oldrosarian's comment of "stop slouching" for that one. What a hoot - that's exactly what it does no matter how much support I give it. It won't bloom at anything less than about 4' for me but refuses to stand up to that height on its own or even with support. I've also noticed this one goes through a lot of bloom color changes from orange to pink to blush pretty quickly. QOH is the most apricot of the bunch and stands up much better, but mine has never looked as good as oldrosarian's photo. It's probably the hardiest of the three, though, blooming OK in my zone 4 pocket and part shade to boot. All three are great roses, but for very different spots in the yard. Jolie is front of a bed, QOH is mid-to-back of the bed, and BGFT is a fainting violet that needs a couch to recline on, perhaps to hide from the Billy Goats Gruff.
