SW alabaster/BM white dove - perfect white for cabinets+shiplap walls?
Comments (60)I just painted my bedroom and master bath SW Alabaster with SW High Reflective White trim and doors. I LOVE the look, both colors work beautifully together. Depending on the time of day (morning sun) it looks white without being too stark white, as the day progresses it warms up turning into a vanilla cream in the evenings. My bedroom is west facing with more windows and a small south window. My master bath is west facing. The High Reflective White stays pretty true to color at all times. Unfortunately they were not able to do the cabinets in HRW as the paint I used on the cabinets could not be mixed in that color. HRW is a color that is funny at Sherwin Williams and kinda' tricky and definitely takes more coats to cover. I used Emerald paint in Alabaster on ceilings, walls, and cabinets in different finishes and Super Paint in Semi Gloss in HRW for trim and doors. I was nervous about using Alabaster on the cabinets in the bathroom but it worked perfectly. I will say, for those that are using a white on walls that is not as warm as Alabaster/White Dove, or more cooler grays (think grays that aren't greige) the Alabaster or White Dove warm soft whites are going to go yellow/cream. I would recommend going with Pure White for cabinets and trim. It is still a soft white without the creaminess of Alabaster. High Reflective White is also a good white it's not as soft as Pure White but still not so white that it looks cheap, but again HRW is hard to cover and cannot be mixed in many sheens and paints. I decided not to go with Pure White with my Alabaster walls because my husband wanted more of a contrast with the doors and trim, I wanted to use Alabaster on everything, but made a compromise with my husband, and went with HRW. I am not at all disappointed with the look. I know I spent countless hours agonizing over the choices and hopefully this will help others that are in the same position....See MorePAINT help! Frosty White Cabinets & BM Soft Chamois or pure white trim
Comments (6)BM Chamois is a warmer white with some yellow undertones, but the current trim color looks fine to be next to the cabinets so if it's close and you're fine with it I say stick with it. Really unless you use the same color as the cabinets it won't be an exact match. Can you paint a sample of the Chamois and hold it against the cabinets to see the contrast? IMO since you have the bright white cabinets and grey soapstone I'd play it safe and go for a cooler white. BM chantilly lace or BM super white would work....See MoreSW Dover White cabinets with SW Pure White walls
Comments (2)Yes. You're exactly right. I was just wondering if the 2 can jive together. I've painted some samples on poster board and in some areas looks great and in others comes off a little blue. My husband will paint 2 smaller walls in the area to know for sure. Thanks for your advice!...See MoreDoes BM Simply White on walls work w/ SW Alabaster trim?
Comments (14)RHM, I will admit that I am fussier than most about my whites. You say you want to brighten up the walls, so my first question would be "what color are your walls now?" Your trim is Alabaster - a light white that is slightly dirty with a little gray green cast, Your cabinets are somewhere between Alabaster and Dover White. If you measure the light, chroma and hue of Dover White vs Alabaster the biggest difference is the Chroma - how gray is it vs how colorful is it. Dover White is less gray so the so the color looks like it is a bit darker and does not have that slight green cast. The first number is light - So Simply white is the lightest color The second number is the chroma - the lower the chroma the more gray , the higher the chroma the more color. The third number is the hue 90 is yellow, 182 is green - this comparison gets tricky because yellow gets kind of olivish green as it goes to gray and when the chroma is really low, like in alabaster I can see that hint of green. Dover White CIE-L*Ch(ab) = 93.765 8.230 99.280° Alabaster CIE-L*Ch(ab) = 93.002 5.636 99.953° Simply White CIE-L*Ch(ab) = 95.648 4.657 106.615° Personally, the first two colors I would test are Dover White and Neutral Ground. I think Neutral Ground is a bit too dark, but I like a little contrast between the wall color and trim color, so I may do 3/4 Dover white and 1/4 Neutral Ground. How I test and blend colors to get exactly what I want is really simple. I own a box of oral medicine syringes - you can buy them from Amazon. When I find two colors that I like, but really want the color to be something in between I mix several variations of the two colors and paint them on 8 1/2 x 11 240lb water color paper. 1 cc of color A + 3 cc of color B 1 cc of color A + 2 cc of color B 2 cc of color A + 2 cc of color B 2 cc of color A + 1 cc of color B 3 cc of color A + 1 cc of color B I mark each sheet with the "recipe" and then test the colors against the colors I already have in my space....See MoreUser
