Best way to store glad bulbs & elephant ears over winter?
Comments (2)Dry and cool will work for both. Don't freak out if they try to start growing in February. Just keep them away from light and they should do fine. The only time I refrigerate is when I want to start something earlier than when the ground warms up normally. I have just removed(last week) Amaryllis from fridge and potted up for Christmas blooms. I have also put Mandevilla, Angel Trumpets, Bananas and Musaenda in garage(unheated) for winter storage. They will go dormant but stay alive and well for earlier start in spring....See MoreBest way to store tomatillos?
Comments (5)I store my bulk end-of-season harvest of tomatillos in an unheated garage in their husks in shallow boxes that are lined with newspapers. The garage temp? not sure, but probably anywhere from 60F and downward as the colder weather progresses. As long as they aren't layered deeply, most will keep for months for me -- well into winter! I do check them occasionally and remove any that have softened or gone bad, and that seems to be caused by excess moisture. I also don't leave them if the garage will go below freezing. :) I know you only asked about shelf-life, but I tried and they also freeze great! just remove the husk and freeze whole in freezer bags....See Morebest way to store seeds
Comments (3)Ezzirah, You can store them in an airtight container in the freezer or fridge, but let them thaw out for several hours before you open up the airtight container after you remove it from the freezer. This will reduce the chance of condensation harming the seeds. You can store them in a container like a plastic storage container, box, etc. in a cool, dry location indoors where they will not be exposed to excessive fluctuations in temperature or humidity. So, inside a house is preferable to the interior of a garage or shed or barn. I leave my seeds inside their original packets, put each packet into a zip lock bag, and store all of the seeds of each type of vegetable in a gallon-size zip-lock bag inside a large (32-quart I think) Rubbermaid storage container. All the small zip-lock bags of herbs are in a separate one-gallon ziplock bag and all the small zip-lock bags of flower seeds are in a couple of one-gallon zip-lock bages. All the zip-lock bags of seeds are then stored in a Rubbermaid-type storage box year-round. That box stays insided the house during the gardening season as I am in and out of it quite a bit as I do succession planting. In the gardening off-season, roughly from October through January, I put the storage box in the tornado shelter, which doubles a a root cellar for us. If you save your own seeds, be sure they have dried down to the proper moisture level before storing them or they'll lose their viability. I'd store my seeds in a fridge or freezer if it were a viable option for me. However, due to the large amounts of seeds I have....and the fact that the summer harvest fills up all our refrigerators and freezers, I don't have the space in a refrigerator or freezer for seeds. Dawn...See MoreWeek 141 - Cheese, glorious cheese - How do you store yours?
Comments (17)Well, that's a concept. If you shred your own cheddar, you won't have to figure out how to store the annoying bags. About a month ago, I started revisiting how I eat and what I eat. So many posts on this forum talked about actual cooking, how and where folks are going to store and eat actual food. My DH travels a lot at the moment, and I realized my food consumption had devolved to pastries, wheat thins and cheese, and...if he was home, some protein and veggies at dinner. My diet was balanced because I ate several kinds of pastries. :) I've been sober for seven years, but I realized my eating was totally addictive and mindless. Physically I'm pretty active with our little "ranch", so that helped counterbalance, I think, but I began reworking the other side of the equation, what and how I eat. Our CSA started back up at just the right time. Anyway, after beacham's condiment post, I cleaned out our refrigerator and noticed the cheese kind of sprawled out on the top shelf, being ignored. I think a plastic bin on a shelf is still the best answer for us and I'll look for the correct size....See More- 8 years ago
