impact windows and doors (yes, I know this is the kitchen forum)
Comments (1)I have not done this, but I am somewhat familiar with Anderson products. I don't see where it would be a problem if you make certain that the screws do not hit the glass and are not so long as to go through to the outside. If I remember correctly the doors are about 1 3/4" thick, which gives you plenty of meat. Because these are expensive doors, and because you're a bit nervous about this application; perhaps you might consider using one of the many custom blind shops that exist all over Florida. It might cost you a bit more, but if they ruin the door, you will have some recourse. Just be certain to tell them your fears and ask them for some assurances. I'm sure they've done this before....See MoreNeed advise for the impact glass windows and doors.
Comments (4)Sorry for the bad format, its phone copied from a pdf file put out by University of Florida has few sources and names. "There are testing standards set forth by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) and/or others that must be met before a window is certified as being impact-resistant. One of the most stringent testing requirements is referenced in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) section of the Florida Building Code, which applies to Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Every exterior opening, residential or commercial, must be provided with protection by shutters or impact-resistant windows against wind-borne debris caused by hurricanes in the HVHZ. The Florida Product Approval System, under the Florida Building Commission, covers products that affect the structural integrity of buildings—therefore windows are included. A company may have its products approved for local or state use. Click on “Product Approval” at www.floridabuilding.org for more information. Note that not all areas of the state require impact-resistant windows. Check with your local building official to determine if you live in such an area. However, if this is a concern, Miami-Dade County has the strictest test protocols in the country for wind-borne debris, air and water tests. The Florida Building Commission recognizes products receiving Miami-Dade NOAs as state-approved products."...See MoreFront door entry right into kitchen..looking for kitchen layout advice
Comments (14)If you want an entry area, put up a wall and have one. We have a home now where someone knocked out the wall between the nice entry and the living room and we basically put the wall back with a shoe bench and shelf arrangement (freestanding because we didn’t want to do construction work) because it just flows better that way. We also just looked at another house which we decided not to go for after much deliberation in part because if we opened it up to get much needed space, we’d end up with a big box with the front door entering right into everything, like a small apartment layout. Houses, especially houses with kids and lots of visitors, need some way to control the flow of traffic and direct people to where they should take off coats and boots and what have you. If you have room for a mud room, great, but if not - entry area is a necessity, IMO. And people are going to be beyond bored with HGTV style everything probably sooner rather than later - next year or the year after it’ll be some other designer and they will be putting walls up because everyone is sick of open plan and always being on display while cooking. If this is your forever home then do what you like and what feels good to you, not what’s popular on HGTV. (If you were going to flip the house then I might be saying something different.) Personally, if my front door were that close to my kitchen, I’d really really really want some kind of wall for privacy. Who wants all your mid-meal cooking mess to be on display to anyone who comes to the door?...See MoreHow to do craftsman trim on windows that are right next to doors?
Comments (6)I know this is an old posting but no one really gave helpful advice at all. So just in case any future readers are looking for the same answer, I would say that the door trim would take priority, then you can but up the window trim to the door trim so that the window trim is cut off when it meets the door trim. Or you can get creative like these folks have where the window and door share a piece of trim. And even if your home is traditional you can still find beautiful trim styles that match the style of your home, like these styles here....See MoreWindows on Washington Ltd
