To prune or not to prune, that is the question...
Comments (4)so sacrifice next years bloom.. and get to them ... i just had to take down a giant lilac .... the biggest 3 branches going over 3 inches... lopers would not have worked ... and i had to go to my folding pruning saw .... cut as close to the ground as possible.. which can be anywhere from an inch to 12 inches ... there is only so much room down in there ... i learned long ago.. the saw is actually less work that lopers... and mine have been rusting in the barn for 10 years ... but whatever pleases you is good enough for me.. just teach that beast a lesson.. lol ken...See Moreto prune or not to prune (that s the (rambling)question
Comments (5)Has it started to produce fresh new canes at all? If so, I think I'd just let them grow, then cut out the old flowered canes in late winter next year. Then you'll get the best of both worlds, enjoying the hips for most of the winter. I planted one last summer. It has hit its stride already and is likely to behave like a monster unleashed in my small, crowded town garden. I'm going to have to cut a lot off after it's flowered just to keep it at bay. I just liked the name so much (it consorts so nicely with the Bishop of Llandaff) that I couldn't resist planting one. Comments (7)I have a 10 ft high weeping norway spruce and support it to grow straight up. I plan to cut the leader off one year and let it cascade down via several side branches. That tree I once cut the leader off when 7 ft tall, but then decided to continue to let it grow taller. So I bent up a side branch at the top, tied it to a stick of bamboo, and it continued growing straight up, making that side branch its new leader.
