Any fertilizer to make succulents spread faster?

I've been planting antique tea cups with succulents for my daughter's wedding this summer and have become hooked!

I've always loved succulents and have several things planted such as a water fountain and several smaller antique containers.

I would like to get some cuttings/splits going faster so I can sell them, possibly this summer. I have a greenhouse for the heat, but are there any fertilizers that might help them speed up? Nancy

How long until wedding? I am assuming that tea cups do not have drainage holes? If so, I would grow them in regular pots until just before wedding, in very well draining mix, and also fertigate generously. I do not think that it is best for succulents (I hardly ever fertilize any of mine), but for a short time they should be OK. I often think that growers overfertilize plants before sending them to sellers - but that is JMO and could be wrong. What makes me think so is that plants are often quite fat, blooming heavily or have lots of buds, and look like they are on steroids. I am sure they also have quite regulated growing conditions, nearly perfect for fast growth (which you may have with a GH - make sure they don't cook!), but suspect lots of fertilizer as an additional help...

I would use balanced fert (I think you guys in US can get FoliagePro easily?)

Mine grow much faster and bigger in native (unamended) soil than in planting mix. No fertilizer.

The Latin name is Portulaca; it comes in numerous flower colors and combinations of colors. I remove wilted blooms along with the seed (sort of cone-shaped, attached to bottom of bloom) to keep it flowering. To some extent it seeds itself, but it does need to come indoors before the first frost, as it's succulent and cold & wet/freezing will kill it fast. Save some seeds for sowing in spring, if you want to try to overwinter it outdoors in warmer zones. After stems stop making new buds at the tips, pinch them back to the base of the plant.

Even a new shipment of rare plants that I potted up today at the Huntington had mold growing on them. This time of the year I am finding mold. Haworthia, from my experience of growing them for the past 30 years, I noticed in hot weather even in Africa they shut down part of the year for about 3 months, they shed the old roots, which will become their fertilizer. I take a plant out of the soil when it does this which is now, law it on it's side on the top of the soil, and wait until I see the new roots growing, then replant it in fresh dry soil, and wait about two weeks before or longer before I start to water again. At that time I take off the dead roots, leaves and while upside down inspect for scale, use Windex, mealies, and wash with soap and water. This works for me, it may not work for you, I also add diatomaceous earth agg. quality that the mealies cannot live in, get it at a nursery. Some folks get nearly as detailed in their ferts as they do their soil. I use MG 15-30-15 diluted to 1/4 strength. You're fertilizing far too often IMO, but others may say differently. I'd only go once a month. There's no need to fertilize plants when they're not in their growth cycle. Figure out what's in growth (and what isn't) and you'll be able to feed appropriately. Plants adjust to the seasons of their location. No, no to the coffee grounds - these plants aren't acid-loving, as they prefer a neutral soil. I'd suggest you get a book on the basic care of C&S - they're usually fairly cheap at the bookstore or often available at a public library. Miles Anderson has two (I think) inexpensive ones which were quite valuable to me when I was beginning in these plants of ours. In this way you can get a lot of 'Aha' moments and be more comfortable about how to grow. Aside from that, you're in a prime area for plants of these sorts - mistakes are more easily forgiven, but you can avoid them by getting some beginner's information under your belt and stride about confident that your plants are getting good care.

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish and what you are growing. If you want your Ariocarpus to have tight, authentic growth then fertilizing is minimal. But if you take a different cactus, say a hybrid Echinopsis that is grown primarily for flowers, then some extra nutrition will help create a better floral display. Small, compact succulents tend to do better with minimal added nutrition. Anything growing in a confined space is better off with less. Anything that is more desirable with shorter internodes or anything where you'd prefer stem mass vs. leaf mass, is better off with less nutrition. Anything in the ground needs little supplementation because the soil tends to have enough. But if you want your Pachypodium lamereii or Adenium to put on fast growth, some extra fertilizer will help. It seems that additional nutrition works best for tropical varieties. The bottom-line: over-fertilization may increase growth, but it won't be "quality" growth. Many succulents do not respond to fertilizer in the same manner as other plants. They don't grow that much faster, they just end up looking weaker and less natural. Most succulents by nature are slow growing and the extra fertilizer won't change that. They're not like Musa, Colocasia or Brugmansia which are nutrient hogs. More important is that micronutrients are present if you are growing in a predominantly inorganic mix. x

Well, the tea cups have already been planted and are in mostly shade. I give them a bit of water about 1x per week....just cause the cups are so tiny. They are actually doing well.

I was asking about growing little guys in the greenhouse (maybe door open most of the time) to get them to multiply faster for other projects such as planting antique planters etc.. That's why I was asking about fertilizer, just to get things spreading faster. Thanks Nancy
