Is your Abe starting?
I was wondering why I've made such a fuss over Abraham Darby. I went to the public rose garden, and the flowers were all wind damaged (we've had those incredible Albuquerque wind storms, where a gust hits and the house shakes, and it sounds like Santa has fallen off his sleigh and landed on the roof), brown and the weak necks made them all face the ground, not that they were worth looking at anyway. Then I went home and was greeted by this. My garden is higher in elevation than the public garden, so it runs about 1-2 weeks or so behind.
I took a whiff and the rich fruitiness hit my limbic system, and then it all came back to me why I love Abe so much. I'm obsessed. Show me your 2018 flowers! I know a few people gave Abe a try again last year after he previously didn't do well. How is yours doing?

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoWow, that’s an amazing bloom! That’s why we love Abe, for sure! That’s a perfect bloom, if I ever saw one. The thrips seem to like my Abe as much as I do. Some blooms are lovely and some are ruined around the edges. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. Mine is doing great, but I cut all the buds that were near opening and sent them home with Sarah last week. I failed to take any pictures of the Abe Darby’s:( There are more coming. Abe is rather swamped by everything else, at the moment, but they’re mostly annuals. They will be out of Abe’s way soon enough. All I have to show today, are buds of future blooms. Lisa

Let's get technical: heat sink from black ABS pipe
Comments (3)Putting the pipes on the outside of your 'thermal area' is a bad idea - you'll have much higher loses. If you have a good thick piece of foam between the water and the wall, then you'll be better off. I have no idea what you mean by ABS pipes (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene is a kind of impact resistant rubber AFAIK). PVC or PE are the only pipes we have here. I would avoid trying to use the ground as thermal storage unless you can build a suitable insulating skirt around the whole house. The rate of transfer of heat is proportional to the difference in temperature times the contact area. Comments (1)I wish I were aware of the new law before I ordered my bathroom faucets for my kids' bath remodel. I am not in California, but I am concerned about lead in my house. If you google California AB1953 and a faucet brand name, those styles that are compliant will pop up. I already got Grohe Eurosmart. Comments (11)My parents dilly dallied with tomatoes and a few other things, but we always went to the farm stands rather than get produce at the grocery store. I had a few small areas in homes with not alot of success. The big shift was when hubby and I quit smoking! It was not only a get healthier thing, but something to do with our time and hands while getting over the smoking thing! Thankfully, I did some research and started slowly with just an 8x8 raised bed (this was changed to 2 3x8' beds for reachability). Gradually we added several more beds including a 4x8 asparagus bed which I miss dearly! After retiring, we moved into town. The home had 1 4x8 bed which pleased me. It ended up the previous owners used it as a construction rubble dump and it was a mess! We had that re-done and also discovered that our soil is fantastic! So now we have a 10x20 in ground area and a 4x8 bed! More than enough! I DO miss my asparagus, though!...See More

Abe is one of the earlier bloomers for me so he’s past the spring flush, which was modest this year. There are a few blooms and buds remaining. If the past 7 years are anything to go by, he will soon happily rust for a few weeks, and I will just snip off as many leaves as I can get to. Soon after that he will send up second and third rounds of blooms, and if he gets enough summer water more after that.
His growth is awkward and the heavy blooms nod; but the fragrance and beauty make him a keeper in my garden.

6 years agoAbe with lots of ruffled petals, great color and scent. Austins are some of the first roses to bloom in my garden each spring and Abe is one the first Austins. Love this rose!
