These are no unusually high ceilings and they for sure do not need anything. Your windows by the fireplace are too close to the fireplace for proper drapes and IMO if you do not need the privacy those are too nice to cover up. Your entertainment center is all you need on that wall do not add stuff to the top. A nice comfy looking space , maybe a new fan and light .

Thanks Patricia! I will look at the possibility of a new fan. It matches the other light fixtures in the foyer/kitchen/dining and it is all open concept. The house has a craftsman vibe. We have 3 boys and two dogs, so this room get lived in A LOT and needs to be comfy.Maybe I am just bored with the decor. Any suggestions for something new on the mantle? Thanks!

I think you have the ideal room for a two couch set up, maybe something like this...

Art on either side of entertainment center.

Large curtain panels on either side of the fireplace windows would be dramatic and add some softness.

Remove the round mirror on the wall by the stairs. If you wanted to do a gallery wall this would be the place, or a series of panels.

I would look for a colorful area rug, something like ninigret showed above, but in colors that will go with your chairs. A more dramatic and colorful painting over the mantel would help. I would choose a rectangular glass and metal coffee table and style it with books, flowers etc. Find some colorful pillows that go with the rug. The TV console also needs more books, and a more thoughtful and balanced arrangement of the other items. Look for a prettier lamp with a less round base, slightly taller.

Edited: Looking at your long, skinny windows, I'd look for a large, horizontal painting, which will also give your nice fireplace more prominence. Two pieces of art, maybe botanical and layered over each other, on either size of the TV console will actually de-emphasize its bulk. Keep the art and frames light in character.

Your room lacks live green plants which add life, bright color, and oxygen and purify the air.

I would put a large live potted plant on top of your entertainment center, but be sure to put a saucer underneath it and something underneath that so you don't ruin the wood.

You can remove the dried twigs from the mantel.

Instead, use cuttings of branches of anything from your garden, they don't need to have flowers on them.

You can also purchase lucky bamboo stalks in your supermarket (which is really dracaena) and put it in a simple vase with water , and it lasts forever as long as you keep it watered. It looks prettiest if you buy an odd number, and some straight and some curlicue.

I would definitely pump up the color in the room. If you are not going to recover the chairs, then maybe you can brighten up your throw pillows.

What is on the wall opposite the entertainment center?

You can change the art on your mantel to something with more bright colors and remove the mauve vase.

You can think about a throw rug, and think about art on either side of the entertainment center.

Don't buy anything that isn't returnable in case you don't like how it looks in your home.

If you have children, stick with a rounded coffee table, you don't want any injuries!

I would add a tall plant on a stand in the right corner and maybe a few decorative items to your coffee table, including a stoneware bowl of some sort to fit in with the Craftsman style of your home.
