Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Bathroom Lighting Fixture Advice

Hi everyone,

We are remodeling our new home and I really could use some advice for our 1/2 bathroom. It is a small space (5x7) downstairs. We are trying to go for a modern/transitional feel, but is not quite finished yet. The picture has an accent wall (its actually tile) that looks a bit rustic, the vanity is custom made and will be a navy blue. When everything is finished we hope it will all pull together nicely. The big decision at this point is our lighting fixture...and it seems to boil down to 3 options.

Should we:

Sconces on each side of the accent wall mid height

2. Sconces on each side of accent wall higher up

3. Central Lighting fixture going across the top of accent wall

Our celling is too short to do a ceiling fixture, and I don't think we could do pendants---and might be tricky for electrical wiring (can see prior spot cut out in pic) I really appreciate your help!

Two sconces at face height would be my choice. The lighting is nicer than overhead.

I would do the two sconces. I think you need to choose the mirror in order to see where the sconces should go.

You don't need to spend a fortune, but don't cheap-out either. You want something with a finish that won't tarnish/discolor easily, esp in a bathroom environment, and you want something with some heft, or weight (not flimsy). We used Ginger's Motiv line of products (Sine and Frame) in all three of our bathrooms and are very happy with them. Lower-priced than the Ginger line, but quality is excellent.

Don't do a recessed light above the sink, you will get shadows. Don't do ONLY a recessed light above the sink. I also used pretty glass tile in the showers and it looks really nice when illuminated with 2 lights and dimmed just a bit. Ambiance lighting for when guests use the full bath downstairs! That sounds so nice! Two additional thoughts, not related to the above note: As you plan your lighting, consider your color scheme. If you're going with today's trendy lots-of-white, maybe-some-gray color scheme, light's going to bounce off those stark whites and could feel harsh. On the other hand, if you're using a softer, darker color scheme, those darker colors will "absorb" some of the light; so you'd need to ask whether you'd need more light fixtures. I like to read in the tub, so I definitely plan to have a light of some sort "behind me" for that purpose.

Here is one in chrome that extends 9 inches. http://www.destinationlighting.com/item/capital-lighting-capital-vanities-chrome-bathroom-light/P1452623 We went with this one in brushed nickel that extends 9.5" and have it with the lights down. http://www.destinationlighting.com/item/feiss-lighting-hamlet-satin-nickel-bathroom-light/P1523323 There are some out there and I am happy to help if you give me details on what you are looking for. I went through this search earlier this year and spent weeks looking. We have a surface mounted medicine cabinet by Bertch that sticks out only about 4 inches. There might be other medicine cabinets. I went through that search too.

If the Kohler website says "available exclusively at (fill in the blank)", then it will not be the same quality or the same exact model.

Thank you, ladies. 2 sconces was my original choice, but wanted to consider other options because I’m not a designer ha! Great point about picking mirror first prior to lighting. My main concern was the electrician running wiring before the tile was sealed down, but was just here and can do it.

I was thinking a circular mirror as well. I like non-rectangular mirrors in powder rooms. More fun. And a circle would fit your wide wall nicely.
