Spring is finally here

I think spring is finally here. Many plants are coming into bloom. Now only if it doesn't frost Saturday night, we might be in the clear.

Here are some of the plants blooming in west central Indiana.

Violas

Violets

Flowering Quince

The viburnum has just starting to flower. It seems so lovely.

These daffodils are all seedlings. We don't hybridize them but someone who attends the Midwest Hybridizer's meeting apparently does. She brings bags of seedling daffodils and sells them.

And here's a cactus that grows on a south facing windowsill.

I know they're not daylilies, but I'm anxious to see flowers of any kind.

Have you ever eaten a Quince? I wonder what it tastes like......And yes on the Pansies/Violas. By the end of our horrible summer I soooo look forward to Pansy season. I usually have a pot or two (almost always the yellow Viola types) that even overwinter. In fact two pots of yellows are still going for me this spring even after our rotten winter......Maryl

Isn't it nice to finally see some flowers blooming. I love pansies but to buy them in spring here is to waste money as most of them seldom last much beyond late May due to the heat. I saw a Quince in bloom at a nursery last week from a distance and it sure caught my eye. Do they produce fruit for you?......The Cactus is lovely. I have a small addiction for C&S and some of the flowers on Cactus are every bit as beautiful as other plants......Hooray for spring!......Maryl

We have two flowering quinces and one does occasionally produce a few fruits. Bob planted a quince tree last season. We'll see what we can do with them with it starts to bear.

The pansies and violas we plant eventually look pretty bad for us too so we tear them out and put something in their place. I love them because we usually can enjoy them for quite some time before the hot weather sets in.

Yes, life is good again... My part time job I love resumes this coming Monday and I have another job on the side...both involve butterfly gardens :-D I just hope I can keep up c 3 jobs... Our snow is completely gone now, though I still see a little frozen ground here and there. Highs in the upper 50s and mid 60s all this week :) I'm just waiting to see my first American Lady or Red Admiral ELF...ETA around three weeks or so as soon as the host plants grow in.

Let's have a little friendly disagreement Mantis ...dandelions versus violets. Gimme violets any time . First they are pretty . Second as you said you can just scratch them out of the garden if you don't want them and even when they become an adult clump they pop out easily . Dandelions on the other hand ( and there are more than one variety of dandelions some with a single tap root and others with a tap root and various side roots ......these are killer to get out ) are the biggest bane to man ......medicinal properties aside. Their roots go for forever and when you are trying to remove them just when you think you have got it .......the root snaps off ........the plant then generates more damn dandelions. I have a tool that goes at least 8 inches into the ground and even that one sometimes can't loosen a dandelion root enough to pull it out intact . I also live surrounded by farmer's fields which they spray within an inch of their lives but when they grow hay , much of it is dandelion and there is noooooooooo getting away from them infesting my gardens. Give me a violet any day!

Love all the spring flowers and colors. My flowering quince is long gone, of course. I love the double petal you have-mine is single. I also have a white one that needs to be moved-it is under a pine tree and has limited blooms each spring. And I really like your seedling daffodils! I would be buying those, too! My iris for the most part froze in full bud and I will have only a few peonies as they too froze. Most of my viburnum has dropped the petals-I must take a picture-looks like snow on the ground--but I have lots of daylily scapes now so it won't be long I hope! So fun to have spring prolonged by these lovely pictures from northern neighbors!

By the way, Nancy, it looks as if we are going straight from about a week of spring to summer. Mid eighties for the next two weeks.

Maryl, I have never tasted a quince. Bob informs me that the flowering variety is not considered edible. We planted the food variety but it will be a long time before it produces fruit. From what I have heard, the fruit is usually cooked. It is said to make fine jelly.

Kay, I think you are right about summer. We were afraid the weather would do that. It's rather hard on the plants, especially the spring bulbs and trees that like more moderate temperatures.

We have a friend who gave us a bunch of yellow daffodil seedlings a few years ago. They are now putting up a big display in a bed along the road. They have slowed some of the traffic. Enjoy, folks.

Isn't that nice when that happens. Our dafs have been over for a month and in a couple of weeks or less, the heat should start to roll in and then I will long for Daffodil days.............Maryl
