Free-Free Free I've Got Lots of Extra Seeds
Comments (6)Okay-okay. No more Emails! . I say Uncle! I heard from so many of you fellow GWebers. I have many requests for the Heirloom beans and the flower mixes and basils. I'll have to put them in a hat and draw out the winners. I will go thru and match up seeds this weekend. And I promise to mail them out by next week Tuesday at the latest. Thanks to all who answered. It's giving me a good feeling to get rid of my Seed Hoard! I'll be in touch with everyone soon who sent Emails! No need to senmd me postage or envelopes or anything in exchange From Jannie...See MoreSo I'm getting more Austins...including climbers but have some ?
Comments (11)Hi Jeff, I'd recommend The Generous Gardener or St Swithin for a climber, not red, but both of them seem to be good choices. I have Spirit of freedom and I'm increasingly underwhelmed by it. I grew Queen of Sweden at my old house and I liked it a lot, but beware that it is a very upright rose... basically shooting straight up with lovely cupped roses on the very tips. It's very vertical. I also grew Tess, and I thought it a decent enough plant but would never grow it again. The Prince too, also grew very vertically, wonderful blooms but not a "bush", rather some sticks with amazing flowers on it. I'd grow it again, but in the back of something else. Same for Queen of Sweden. I really like Sister Elizabeth. Short plant, smallish flowers, but really great shape, strong scent, and very good rebloom. I'm a fan of the highly-scented English roses. Today was the first bloom of the year on Sceptre'd Isle and the scent is just fantastic. Between my old house and my new place, I've probably grown about 50 Austins, and my favourites (at this point) would include: Jude the Obscure Lady E. H. Jubilee Celebration St. Cecelia Sceptre'd Isle Harlow Carr Gentle Hermione The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild Alan Titchmarsh Eglantyne Evelyn Sister Elizabeth Of course, your climate will make all the difference, especially in 5b, I've grown English Roses only in California and England.... but those are the ones I wouldn't want to be without. New to me this year, but roses I liked when I visited David Austin's nursery last year include: The Alnwick Rose, The Wedgewood Rose, Munstead Wood and Princess Alexandra of Kent. On the wishlist for next year some oldies like Pretty Jessica, Brother Cadfael, Abe Darby, Mary Magdalene and Lilac Rose; and of course, the new roses will be revealed soon, so perhaps something from there will be especially tempting. Anyway, hope something in this helps you out, good luck with the new planting, I'm sure your mom will love them!...See MoreI'm Getting Free Azaela's!
Comments (11)You can move azaleas any time. The easiest time is when they are dormant, which is right now. They have shallow roots so you don't have to dig very deep, but you do need to maintain the integrity of the root ball. Ideally, you would root prune the plants a couple months before you move them. This means, going around the plants with a spade and digging into the ground to cut off any roots that go outside the main root ball. This causes the roots to form a denser root ball that is easier to move. If you can't do the root pruning in advance, then be extra careful. Be sure to plant them in a place that is very well drained. You will need to keep them watered until they get established in their new homes. However if they get too wet they will drown. That is why you need very good drainage. It is easiest if you plant them in mounds. That helps provide good drainage. If your soil is well drained, just be careful. Try to find out which plants will take full sun and which will bloom in partial shade if you can. Other wise you may have plants in the sun that look awful and plants in the shade that don't bloom. I would avoid any high nitrogen fertilizer. Perhaps a very small amount of Hollytone would be OK. A high nitrogen fertilizer like Miracid will stress them too much. Good luck and enjoy your new plants. Here is a link that might be useful: How to transplant rhododendrons and azaleas....See MoreOk,now I'm starting to get a little angry at the cool summer so far..
Comments (21)Not sure the exact 4th was..but around 73/74F and pleasant like you say since I was pruning and only sweated- not soaked! This could turn around for the bay area but most bets are its going to be below average in highs-but as always these days, above average in lows in the bay area summers. Interesting. Europe has been cooler than average and I would guess some relationship in lows and jet streams....See Morebeesneeds
