decorating above kitchen cabinets
Comments (15)Well, I'm of the opinion that it's totally OK to use good quality artificial greenery . . . if it's used in a setting where that plant could actually grow. Obviously, it would be extremely difficult to grow real plants in a tipped sideways basket, though (LOL). That said, I always think that your above cabinet spaces should reflect you and your interests and/or continue the look of the room. I do think that a few larger items grouped together look better than a lot of little things lined up "like ducks in a row". It's a great space to showcase your collections, if they'll work with the rest of your kitchen decor. My own home here in New Mexico is a Contemporary Hacienda style home, with Spanish Colonial and Southwestern art, furniture and accessories. Bright Talavera-type pottery and santos (statues of saints and angels) are two of the things I like and collect and so I've used these types of things above my own cabs. BTW, I also have built-in lighting up there so that this area is lit in the evenings. But . . . my laundry room is out of the public eye and I've turned it into my little refuge filled with childhood memories from our summerhouse on Lake St.Clair outside Windsor. If my home and kitchen were of a different style, I would have used them in my kitchen instead. Above the cabs in my laundry room, I've got my inherited collection of Cottageware pieces displayed. Many are too small to look good sitting on their own above any cab, so I've put the smaller ones up on old cake pedestals, a cottage-y shelf and even a rustic doll chair. It's my solution of how lift up and showcase my smaller pieces. As you can see, I also like propping framed art up above my cabs. This wonderful retro-looking clothespin bag, like the one my mom used, hangs on another short wall and continues the cottage look. That and other chilhood memorabilia helps my Cottageware work in this room: Anyhoo, you can take any of these ideas here on this thread and apply them to fit you and your kitchen; your interests and/or your collections. Comments (4)If we had a wider picture of the whole space we would be able to make better suggestions. How big is the space? What are the finishes in the rest of the kitchen - appliances, floors, etc. Even though you are looking for something for that small space, you have to decorate so it works with the whole kitchen....See MoreKitchen Wall Decor- any suggestions?
Comments (8)My preference would be no decor, aside from what's on the sill. I've seen sconces mounted in that area, but that could be problematic to wire, depending on the framing. Maybe they had shelves and decided against bringing them back with the new cabinets? I might put one shelf on each side, right above the backsplash. That way they'll be easy to reach and clean and put more fresh herbs within reach. If you think the area begs for decor, visit some local art fairs and look at pottery. For sophisticated, canisters would go in the cabinet and countertops would be clear, except for frequent use items. Comments (12)is this a rental? I ask because that florescent light in the kitchen is horrible. why someone would go to all the trouble of redoing the kitchen and leaving that cheap light is beyond me. The kitchen is great looking! With a proper light fixture, I think the colors would look better. this light is inexpensive. It also gives you 4 bulbs. Bring in some LED 60W bulbs in the cool light temp (4000K) and the entire kitchen would light up! If you rent, ask your landlord if you buy the light, can it be switched. it's not a big deal to do it. very simple. If it's yours, ask a friend to help you. Then bring in a runner (say a 2.6" X 8' size) to go in front of the sink area color is up to you. everything is pretty neutral, so get something you like. Then bring in some wood cutting boards, some color w/pots or vases, maybe some plants (faux is fine) I would be tempted to paint that end wall a dark color and add some art or something or cutting boards, vintage kitchen things i think black would look good. this one is chalkboard paint, but a deep black w/some cool art, or do a medium gray and add colorful pictures since everything is very neutral. you could also put one of those magnetic knife holders on the wall. and art....See Morefriedajune
