I have seen a few issues passed on to me from others. I has far fewer ads, as I recall, than other such mags, which may account for the higher price. I recall finding some good recipes. Not super cutting edge, just good "tried and true" dishes.

It's a very pretty magazine, but I've rarely found recipes in it that appeal to me. Perhaps it's changed since I last looked at an issue, but in the past, I found that the recipes relied too much on canned/boxed ingredients for my taste. I'm not against using the occasional convenience item and have used plenty of canned soups in my time, but that's about as far as I go with pre-packaged items.

Also, there are so many recipes available online for free, that I'd rather go that route. Ideas at my fingertips and no paper magazines to recycle/deal with.

Maybe buy a copy at the checkout and decide for yourself if they publish the types of recipes you would make.

I found a recipe for a crock pot pork tenderloin in the Taste of Home. Its my goto for a tenderloin (pork) simple down home recipe. No prepared ingredients, but its too simple for that. Lol.

I enjoy reading this mag. I've found tons of great recipes but I agree a fair amount rely on prepared ingredients. Still lots that don't.

I don't expecially like looking at recipes online, well from random blogs. I do go to sites with a good rep.

Taste of Home is available in my public library's electronic system, so I could download it and read it on my tablet if I wanted to. You might find it's available at your library, too.

"Taste of Home" is part of Reiman Publications. "Country", "Reminisce", "Birds

and Blooms", and many others are "sister" magazines. They are all beautifully

put together and fun to read. Not sure how good the recipes are though. But

you would still enjoy reading it, I'm sure.

We've a nearby Save Mart that has magazines near the patio furniture. One could scan a cooking magazine there while the spouse was shopping and not even have to pay for the silly thing.

I love cooking magazines, although I do little of it any more. They do tend to pile up!

There are discount sites where you could get a subscription for far less. It's only 6 issues/year. Go to your local library and see if you like it enough to get a subscription.

Taste Of Home used to be a really nice magazine back when it was ad free and full of regional recipes from real people across the country. It was based on how people who led real lives ate. Good old fashioned family meals. Sure they used convenience foods. That is how most families ate for the several decades before every one went nuts with fear of food. I still have those old issues. Now it is just like any other magazine, far more ads than useful content. There are plenty of Taste of Home recipes online.

My SIL has used a recipe for oatmeal dinner rolls from taste of home for the last several years that are delicious! Of course, her standard white flour yeast rolls were wonderful too, but when she found she was pre-diabetic, she switched to a healthier recipe.

I haven't had a cooking magazine subscription for a while (or any magazine subscription other than Garden Design) but I always enjoyed Cooking Light, found the recipes tasty and with ingredients not foreign to most of us. Or too expensive to buy to cook with ;0) Not calorie free or totally non-fat, just versions of things a little bit healthier. Cooking here takes some thought - I don't count calories and don't need to. DH needs to watch, or will gain, and we'd both like to enjoy what we are eating.

Yes, I agree with watchmelol. I used to take it when it first came out and it was fantastic. Family recipes that were tried and true. No ads. I still have all my old issues. I got a Seafood Lasagna from it that is the best. Not anything you want to make often because of all the butter and cream. It is to die for once or twice a year. Then they started all the contests for _____ (insert food item) and people just started making things up to win. I canceled my subscription. If you can find some old ones, grab them. I wouldn't bother with the new ones.

I do like Cook's Illustrated, but you have to pay for the print magazine and then pay if you want the online also.

One of the things I don't like about TOH is that they repeat the recipes in them So every issue doesn't have all new recipes. Reiman also uses the same recipes in their other magazines too and they are repeated there too. I like to just get them online on their site.

Taste Of Home and Allrecipes magazines are my guilty pleasure. I like cooking magazines because you can clip a recipe for later use. Taste Of Home is $8 on amazon for 8 issues. I get a subscription when I find it for $5 on a magazine site. Same for Allrecipes which is my favorite if I had to pick one.

This winter I got 3 magazines for $5.00 (not $5.00 a magazine but $5.00 for one year for all three) Taste of Home, Allrecipes and Better Homes and Gardens. Frankly, I enjoy just getting the recipe of the day from Taste of Home and Allrecipes more than the magazines. But for $5.00 how could I go wrong. When the subscription expires, I will not renew. I'm a pack rack and they start accumulating too fast but I've been pretty good about going through them, tearing out recipes I think I want and give the magazines to my hairdresser. Then when I look at the recipes I've torn out, weeks later, I usually toss them.

I used to love Cooks Illustrated. I don't cook very much anymore and don't read magazines either. I did enjoy it though,

I would also suggest going to your library and checking it out. At our libraries, we can take home the magazines just like a book if it isn't the current issue.

Jasdip do you ever look at the recipes on allrecipies.com? There are thousands and you can set up a free online recipe box with categories for sorting. No paper, no mess-you have the option of printing any you choose. I keep them in there then print one if I decide to make it. Another great feature is people rate and review the recipes. I only save 4-5 star ones.

If anyone is interested I just saw Cooks Illustrated on a deal site. $7.99/year at discountmags using the code SOUTHERNSAVE. I like that magazine-it picks a free recipes and tweaks ingredients as well as cooking methods to get the best possible version of that dish.

The only cooking magazines I buy now are either Fine Cooking or Cooks Illustrated, or either of their specialty editions. You can also find Cooks Illustrated recipes online if you Google them. They don't come from the actual site but from someone who has used the recipe and posts it. I wish you lived closer Jasdip. I have so many Food Network magazines I would love to give to someome and quite a few of past issues of older Taste of Home. The only recipes I use out of cooking magazines though are the ones from Cooks Illustrated. I don't usually follow recipes but love to look at cooking magazines.

I save a lot of recipes on Pinterest, and I have tried many and most have been really good, and ones I will make over and over, but like Jasdip, I hate the dozens of pictures of each recipe, showing every little step. Just one pic, and post the recipe....I think I can figure it out.

You might like Food & Wine. My son gave me a subscription to that one time. It's a fun one to read.

Since you use that freecycle site, you could ask for this magazines. I bet people have piles of them sitting around! I have also seen these at thrift shops and garage sales.

Jas, want a hard copy? Try the recipe and if you like it, do what I do. Write it down on a recipe card. I have three recipe books with T & T recipes. One is Appetizers and Salads, another, Baking (Cookies, Breads, Cakes, & Desserts) and the third is Meats, Casseroles, Veggies. Whoops, there's a fourth, Soups, Beverages, Miscellaneous.. I cannot tell you how many 5 star recipes I've tried that were, at best, 2 stars.

Arkansas, I've put out a request for specific cooking magazines on Freecycle (Food and Drink from the LCBO) and someone has those, a year's supply of Bon Appetit and Canadian Living set aside for me!

CherryFizz, I'm surprised at the number of ads in Fine Cooking. I know that Costco sells mags cheaper than anywhere else.

I liked the Martha Stewart "Everyday Cooking", but they stopped publishing it. You might get it on Freecycle.

I do have quite a number of Everyday Food, from Freecycle a while back. They're handy to tuck in my purse and browse. I've been leaving them at the hospital when we spend our days there.

You would think at my age I would stop looking. In my lifetime, I couldn't make all the recipes I already have. I think it's a sickness!

I go to my library and when I find a recipe I like I take a pic of it with my phone! No muss no fuss and it is there and I can print it out at home!

Georgysmom, it's definitely addicting, for me. I love watching tv and at the same time look thru and write out recipes.

I gravitate to those types of magazines whenever I'm in a waiting room, etc.

Just last week, I said I wasn't going to look for new ones, I've got a ton of recipes already, waiting to be tried.

Speaking of cooking magazines, Taste of Home has a recipe for Arnold Palmer cupcakes. My sister (Renee-FL) always drinks Arnold Palmers! I'm going to make them for her. I can't imagine how they will taste, curious.

I love taste of home magazines, but they can be pricey. I think they still offer a free trial where you get the first one free. I can't remember if they are full of ads or not. I hate magazine just for that reason.

Not really a cooking magazine, but for anyone wanting help with cooking for a diabetic, there is one titled "Diabetic Living" It is just published 4 times a year. About half of the magazines contents is tips/info on what's new in the diabetes world, and the other half is recipes. A nicely put together magazine with lots of useful info and recipes.

I used to enjoy Southern Living for its content, and especially their recipes. Now you can find almost anything online. I also am a fan of Cooks Illustrated. I have their big Cook’s ‘bible’ which has a lot of good reference info in it. But no I don’t subscribe to any specific recipe publications.

I saved my Gourmet magazines for years and years. Finally, took the plunge and threw out all but a special few. I loved that magazine. I took Bon Appetite for a while - didn't love it the way I did Gourmet. Now, I mainly get new recipe ideas from my online subscription to the NYTimes. I've always liked their recipes - have a few that are more than 40 years old! And I can save them in my own "recipe box" online - no more "stuff" in my shelves or my loose-leaf notebook. I only print one out if I'm actually going to cook it, and with my health issues, that only happens every month or so. But hope springs eternal that someday I may again be able to cook wonderful things again, not just meals that can be prepared in less than 15 minutes.
