Glass Patio Cover in PNW?

Our patio doors open onto the south side of our rancher, and we will be adding a large, low deck (12'x25' ish) to run along this side of the house. We'd like it to be a covered space, but don't want to cut the south-side light coming into the house, particularly in the grey winters.

We're considering a pergola-like frame for the cover, with a glass top. We hope this would give us a bit of a sun-room effect in the fall and spring, a place to over-winter some tender plants (like small lemon trees, etc), and potentially even a sheltered spot to start seeds in the spring.

My concern is with our dry, hot summers--a glass top means a baking, greenhouse effect July-Sept! I'm happy to plant some climbing vines to create some summer shade, or would a series of retractable curtain panels under the glass work to cut the sun? Am I crazy for considering a glass structure on the south side in the pnw? Is there another product we should be considering?

Thanks for sharing your experience!
