Susan, whack the rogue canes back to 3". You can let them bloom first or not. Then the cane makes 2 or 3 laterals; cut these back to 2 or 3 leaves each and you get more branches. Etc. Or, if the canes are flexible and 4-7' long, bend the cane in a hoop and tie it to its own base ("self-pegging"). It will make 3 or 4 laterals at the top of the arch. You can cut off the outer/downward section later if you want. Or, something that works with some varieties not others is to pinch out the growth tips of strong basals when they are about 14" long. Be sure you get the fleshy growth tip, not just leaves. Some roses will branch in response, others will make just one shoot and keep going up. Most shrub roses have an awkward adolescence. You have to be patient and work with them for a few years, just as you know your daughter won't be 13 forever.

jam casualties. Yup, you're right Annie. It happens to all of us. I should have clarified when speaking of less pectin in overripe fruit that I was referring primarily to traditional no-commercial-pectin preserves. Peaches don't have much pectin at the best of times. (They're also low-acid.) Without commercial pectin the condition of the fruit is critical. But you could use commercial pectin and improve the odds considerably. The problem with commercial pectin, though, is you also need more sugar for the pectin to "work." (I know, it's counter-intuitive.) Therefore the jam tends to have less of the true fruit flavor. Unless you use Pomona Pectin. You could jell water with that and can use as much or as little sugar as you like. I don't care for Pomona, but it does have its uses. Carol

There are many zelkova planted in a nearby walmart parking lot. They are not quite as large as the ones above, however they are starting to have terrible dieback.

my new (fall2016) one and only Wu..record rain and it was flooded for a bit..planted on the high end of a baby slope..has some yellow leaves and the scape is yellow :-( hope it's a rare occurance..hate to move it..seems like I JUST planted it!..I read that because pines are narrow at the top as opposed to a deciduous tree plants under them get some light..interesting huh?..of course mine is under many deciduous trees :-(
