Drainage problem

Hello,

I have a section of my yard that is pure rock solid clay. I want to plant raspberries there, and I envisioned digging channels from the base of the raspberry bed to the nearby driveway and filling with sand to allow drainage. However, now that my neighbor bulldozed the beds for me and it has rained and filled with water, and a week has gone by with almost no drainage, I'm thinking that wont' be enough.

I am willing to put a french drain along the length of the raspberry bed, but I'm wondering if anyone with experience can suggest anything else. I am committed to growing raspberries....I just need a solution to drain the bed.

With clay, don't add sand. You will end up with something akin to concrete! Add gypsum and organic matter. I need to get more gypsum, but adding compost works really well. You have to do it every year though. Can you stand to wait until next year? Lasagne gardening totally transformed one of my beds. Now, I need to do the same in several other areas. I have a yard here in Virginia with nothing but arell (marine) clay. Clay is not awful, but much better when amended.

Thanks Cyn....unfortunately this clay is not usable at all. It;s already like concrete! It would take years to amend it and I'd have to amend a huge area to allow drainage for my small raspberry bed----it's not worth it.

My plan is to put much better soil (with compost, peat, etc) in the trench. However, it won't drain unless there is some sort of outlet. I would do a raised bed but I'm told raspberries don't like to be fussed over that much....but I'm sure they don't want to drown either.

So far my only realistic idea is a french drain. Any other thoughts?

Whether a house sits on a hillside or on level ground, you must first of all slant the soil to lead the water away from the house. There are three kinds of tiles: Above ground drainage tiles lead rain water away from the house on top of the ground, e.g. the water coming from the roof. Below ground drainage tiles are installed about 2 to 4 below the surface. They are a 4 to 8" perforated plastic pipes which travel across fields at intervals, conducting surplus water into a ditch or county drain. Weeping tiles are in the ground under the house and lead the ground water into the sewer. Without weeping tiles the ground water pressure would lift the foundation. Another hint: Never build a concrete sidewalk next to a building. You will need to tear it up whenever you raise the settling soil around the building. Use blocks instead which are light enough to be picked up. If you have a surplus water, you might consider creating a pond into which you could lead the water from the drainage tiles.

If the basic grading around your how wasn't done correctly at the build or over the years has settled badly... the best option would be to get it graded again.... but this is also the most costly and destructive to any existing landscaping you have in place. Since no one else has jumped in… here’s my take. I am not a pro… so take that into consideration. But if I had a similar problem.. This is what I might do. Adding porous soil on top won’t help. This would include sand, many “topsoils” you can buy at big box stores, or most likely any “dirt” you can buy at a big box store. Many times these aremade from organic materials which will break down over time and you will end up in the same spot. They typically don’t have much mineral content which won’t degrade. Assuming you have clay soil… you would want to add more clay soil to match the clay soil below your top soil. The dense clay is what will direct your water in any directiong. So you could scrape back the decent top soil you have until you get to the subsoil and then add the new clay soil….. Increasing the slope. Then pull the decent top soil back. You could find a source for “clean fill dirt” or just find some cruddy clean dirt from construction site to get the “clay” that you need. Or you can get it delivered. It’s a lot of work. Another option would be to add a french drain of some sort. There’s many youtube videos on this process. It’s a lot of work too! You have any pictures to give a better idea of your issue?

I'm a little confused by your description, but why exactly aren't the weep holes working? Are they too small or is the floor not sloped towards them as it should be? If they're too small, then you should be able to enlarge them. If the floor is too flat, then you may well have to redo the floor to enable it to drain properly. You could also try and work something out with rain gutters around the perimeter of the roof there but it's probably not going to look great.

Without seeing it, I can't really offer specific recommendations. However, masonry block foundations are definitely prone to water wicking into them. If it were my house, and again - not seeing your situation, I would figure on digging down to the house footer, doing a waterproof membrane on the wall, installing a drain tile along the house footer, backfilling with gravel, and then regrading to move water away from the back of the house as much as possible. I'm not really sure what a drain tile at 3-4 ft down would accomplish if the floor is below that.

Even with a French drain installed, you don't want to create a trench. All that will do is create an elongated "bathtub" full of moisture retentive soil in the poorly draining clay. The drain just won't work fast enough or efficiently enough to move excess groundwater away before it saturates the improved soil you used as fill. The way to work with a poorly draining, heavy clay soil is to plant high.....a raised bed is exactly what you need!! It is the simplest, easiest and least expensive solution.

I am not sure why you think this would not be appropriate for growing raspberries......many gardeners grow them in raised beds. They can tolerate anything except for poor drainage, which I guarantee is what you will get with digging a trench in clay and filling with a better soil.

Thanks! It was a consultant at a local nursery that told me to plant raspberries in the ground. I took her at her word-----and have already put in a ton of effort on this. But I'll keep researching!
