Comments (4)Thank you altorama! The big palm tree is a date palm, unusually fat, it is a heritage tree (the city protects them, I wouldnt be allowed to cut it down, as if I would want to), planted, we believe, in the 20's when the house was built. Climbing on the porch is New Dawn--Im so lucky, I always wanted this rose and when I bought this house here it was!-- star jasmine, wisteria and nastursium. My house's name is Rosebud, but it's usually called Mousie Housie. ;)...See MoreIkea Super Hack - Part 2
Comments (58)Dutty nails it with this quote: "Is Ikea for everyone? No. Are there better cabinets out there? Yes. But for the money, it's a VALUE and you can do amazing things with a little ingenuity. Plus, with the savings you can put drawers everywhere, inserts, soft close, etc. All of those would be UPGRADES with a cabinet company. The thing you need to be most careful with is who you hire to put it all together and PLAN. PLAN. PLAN⦠make sure you KNOW the product inside and out. " Dh was just drilling through a Home Depot particleboard panel that had an IKEA cabinet behind it. He remarked that it was incredible how much denser the IKEA cabinet side was compared to the no-name particleboard - not the same stuff at all. Also, he had a major allergy attack while working with the Home Depot particleboard - something he hadn't experienced during hacking the IKEA cabinets at all. I wondered if that's because IKEA particleboard is made to EU standards which limits some VOC levels, etc. It's a mistake to assume that all particleboard is created equal. IKEA wouldn't be able to warranty their kitchens for 25 years if their stuff was the same crappy material that my home's original 2001 builder grade cabinets were made from for example....See MoreHacked off my painter, now what?
Comments (49)I was born and raised in MS and now live in Louisiana so I am a southern lady through and through. Beyond that, my dad was a shovenist (can't remember how to spell it but you know what I mean). He believe woman should be inside barefoot and pregnant. My husband on the other hand is not at all. Without trying to catch rath of the board, I do think your dh was partially right. Yes, you should be able to chew the painter out in front of anyone. The problem is that there are some out there that are pigs and it will only cause more trouble to do so in front of their son. Seems to me your painter could fit into the pig category. Of course, this shouldn't be the case but it might have helped that the kid wasn't present and your dh or other contractor do the fussing. Right or wrong sometimes doesn't matter. In the end, you wanted them to do a better job and if he is a pig that doesn't want a woman telling him what to do then it would probably make matters worse rather than better. Having said that, I know what should be done but I would have tossed that pig out on his curly tail. I never back down, even when I probably should, and being that I am a large woman 6' tall, I usually get my way. Dh just shakes his head when he sees that light in my eyes and my walking off with that look. So you see, I don't fault you but at the same time I do understand your dh. I hope the paint is now finished correctly and you are enjoying life....See MoreKatsura - any advantages of female or of male? Do I need both?
Comments (39)They aren't mine - they grow on the campus where I work. As you can see the "fruit" is tiny and it's a dry capsule I believe, so doesn't seem to create any visible mess, just changes the look of the bare branches in winter. Until I took a good look at them one day when they were leafless, they were indistinguishable. In fall the color and scent are lovely, and they are attractive trees but not spectacular the rest of the year. I am more fond of the weeping forms and would choose one of them for my own yard. I prefer the clean look of the males, but if you prefer the female winter look, check to see if any of the smaller forms are female. I don't think it should be as important as the size and form, however....See Morepetalique
