Recipe for a well-drained but rich container soil
Comments (13)You are asking some very good questions.......keep it up :-)) Organics in container gardening are highly overrated. It is really important to understand the concepts behind container growing and how radically they differ from inground gardening. The key elements are fast drainage and aeration.......once you have achieved those two primary factors, everything else can be massaged to your specific needs. Durability and textural content of the potting mix should be your focus - nutrient levels are addressed by fertilizing and watering is key but these will always be outside factors under the control of the gardener, not the soil mix. The reasons significant percentages of organics in a potting mix are not advised are multiple. First, organics continue to decompose and breakdown, squeezing out pore space, reducing to a uniform and small particle size and then impacting the fast drainage required. Second, depending on source the moisture retentiveness may be excessive. Third, their nutrient content, if any, is low so it makes sense to evaluate exactly what they are providing in the way of benefits compared to what they may detract from the potting mix. There will likely always be some percentage of 'organics' in a potting mix - without any there would be NO moisture retention! But it is important to consider the source - peat is already nearly fully decomposed so no further breakdown is expected - particle size won't change (but is small already). Both coir and bark fines (usually composted bark fines) are very slow to decompose and add both a degree of moisture retention as well as durability. Why do growers use compost or manure at all if their nutrient content is so low? Because this kind of organic matter is vital to inground growing conditions - not container growing. Organic matter adds the textural component that most garden soils lack, it lightens and adds aeration and it encourages a healthy soli biology. And it does have nutrient value although limited compared to a "fertilizer". That's why compost and other organic matter are considered soil amendments, not fertilizers. Their importance and relevance is directed at inground gardening, not container gardening If you haven't already, I would strongly urge you to read this excellent and extremely long running post I've linked to from our recognized container gardening guru, Al (tapla). It pretty much explains it all :-)) Here is a link that might be useful: everythg you could possibly need to know about container soils....See MorePot doesn't drain well
Comments (2)Are you pre-moistening the mix before you use it? It can be hard to get completely dry mix to soak up water in a pot and may take some time. Perhaps what you're doing when you use that probe to poke up through the holes is just allowing all the water to find a clear channel and instead of saturating the mix, it's just running through. Perlite shouldn't be a problem as many people use a layer of perlite at the bottom of the pot before adding their soil-less mix on top. That drains just fine....See MoreCabrio Washer No Agitator Hard On Clothes/ Doesn't clean well??
Comments (24)Hard on clothes, wrinkles clothes, recommends extra rinse cycle? How does that save on water. Must use H E Detergent, that cost more money. Once a month, you must clean it with a special rinse, that whirlpool probably sells? Bought it the other day, delivered today, going back tomorrow to exchange it. I should have know, read many other post that said clothing was wrinkled, hair and dirt aren't removed. Think about it, the old washer, would fill all the way up and the clothes would float around and the hair would float off. you could pull the dial/button out on the old model and your clothes could soak, or you could delay your wash that way while you waited for someone to bring down there clothes to include in that wash. You could "spin" your good dress shirts only 3 minutes and open the lid and take them out so they would not wrinkle by spining till practically dry like this model does. You can't open it, it locks. Oops, forget a sock, or a last minute blouse, TOO BAD. Loved my older washer, although it was a Maytag that only lasted 6 years. Then today I read the link that I attached and I'm afraid to get one of these high energy top loaders, horrible reviews. GIVE ME AN OLD FASHIONED WASHER WITH AN AGITATOR ANY DAY! Comments (52)You won't need starter when you overseed, and the new grass won't need a thing for at least 30 days after sprout (seed contains the first month of every required resource). At the 1 month point, feed gently with a nitrogen-bearing fertilizer, or feed with an organic grain-based fertilizer when you plant (it'll become available at week 3 to 4). Watering...I'd play it by ear, but given your sodium levels, I'd still go with the full inch until those go down. We really don't want to make that any worse, which shallow irrigation will do....See Moredinner_s
