Can this quartz counter be saved?

Nightmare: kitchen fire in my new kitchen! Caused by electrician error, affected area around range. Going to attempt clean up tomorrow—what method/product should I use? Waiting to hear from fabricator to see if it can be polished out. House under construction, no one injured.

Someone should pay.....and it shouldn't be you!! The electrical contractor better hope it can be salvaged!

Impossible to tell from that picture. Scrub the black off with some acetone and take another, please.

I'd slap a fence on the Raptor and cut the tops down in the house. The inside corners and ends that butt to cabinets and walls would have to be freehanded. The masking and cleanup bill would be about as much as the work itself, but it could be done depending on the size and configuration of the job. Of course this is assuming the edges lip over the cabinets; you can't cut the edge off and expose underlayment. If not, you're back to replacement. Here is a link that might be useful: Raptor

You'll just have to see how the calacatta looks with it. I have a carrara mini-brick sample and I thought it looked too white with the torquay. I was planning for torquay on the island and carrara on the backsplash, and I wonder if any of the marbles would look good if they are right up next to each torquay. I think the key might be to use a mosaic with small enough tiles that you aren't seeing the marble veining. You'll just have to try different tiles and see if any work. I'll post a link to the website with the irregular one - that's one of my favorites, too. I also really like the 2"x12" field tile with silver medley gemstones in the last picture. Those are Jeffrey Court tiles, and if you go to their website you might find something you love. They are expensive, but if you have a small space it isn't so bad. Here are some outdated photos. First shows the burn mark, second a crack. This is on left side, in the back, right next to the slide in range. Thank you for the optimistic comment.

The heat has caused the quartz content to explode out, must have been a decent fire. Also why you have a slight crack in the stone.

Would need to be recut along that edge and polished out.

Whether or not it can be repaired depends on things not subject to picture interpretation.

When damage happens and it's not the homeowner's fault, I call them my 100%ers. They feel and are entitled to be made 100% whole. The standards for an acceptable repair for these folks are much higher than if they set their own fire.

Is the range a slide-in style with a flange that covers the top edge slightly? It's easy to live with a less-than-perfect repair if it's virtually never seen.

Can you use accepting a less-than-perfect repair as leverage with the electrician's liability insurance carrier? If so, maybe you can get some new window treatments, a highly visible item, as a trade-off.

It may not be as easy as simply recutting and polishing the edge. It looks like the existing edge is flush with the cabinet. We can't tell from the picture if the piece can be pulled down to compensate for the shortened edge. We can't tell if the piece can be cost effectively removed for cutting.

Linda, the electrician’s insurance will cover all damage. I’m trying to evaluate if it could be saved or we need to replace. I’m going to speak with fabricator this week to see what they can do. Arghh.

They did a great job polishing out the dark stains on sides/edges. The crack as seen on photo 2 is now flat but still dark with the embedded soot. They are coming back with a top polisher to try to improve. I’m relieved to save it.

Wow, that repair looks great. To be honest, the soot filled crack looks like it could just be an extra dark vein. I hope they fix it to your satisfaction. What a horrible thing to have to go through!
