Uh ... you need to take measurements and do a template to see what fits best where.

The best layout for the entire room might or might not allow that "river" on the island.

One way is to cut cardboard shapes the size of the intended island and countertops and tape them to the stone. Place the pieces over the features you want to put in prominent places and see what happens.

Thanks everyone! We went back to see it again yesterday because I had a couple of things I wanted to look at after having the sample at home in our light and as I looked at the the pictures I started questioning the decision (because I question all major decisions on this remodel!). After seeing it again we still love it. The photos really don’t capture it well, it is so pretty and the colors go so well with the cabinets. I really like the one with the “river” in it too. That was the one we both said “this one” to and then had to narrow down the second slab out of a few.

I know that we need to plan the whole room, not just the island. I think that we should be able to make it work to use a chunk of the river in the island though. That is the stone we were both initially drawn to so I think I want to keep as much of it as one piece as possible. We really can’t go in with cardboard pieces as it is still at the stone shop. Once we get to that point we will sit down with the fabricator and go through how it will be later out. I will definitely insist on a meeting when he is laying it out because there are several elements we want included. I don’t want my favorite parts to end up as remenants.

Do a preliminary layout with measurements and tape now. Take pictures with your phone of how you like it. Send those to the fabricator for comment. Then he knows from the beginning you're involved.

Those warehouse lights are horrible. Did you ask them to move one of the slabs outside to see the colors in real light? My local stone yards are happy to do that with your final choices.

Chispa - we didn’t. I don’t know if thy would be open to that or not. The slab we looked at was actually directly under a large skylight, so I think we have a pretty good idea of the color, plus we got some samples to take home. That is a good idea to ask though, I didn’t know places would do that.
