Closet shelving material
Comments (3)i had a lot of closets to do, including two master closets (his & hers) and a very large closet for my daughter. all of the closet "systems" i priced out were outrageously expensive compared to the price our trim carpenter gave us. he ended up doing my pantry and mudroom cubbies as well as my son's closet, linen closet, media closet and two guest room closets. planning on having him back to do more bookcases later. fyi: the closet systems were all priced out in mdf (which contains formaldehyde) as compared to the closets we had built in solid maple....See MoreMDF for closet shelving
Comments (3)The HD near me stock MD at around the price you mentioned, so that's probably what it is. Regarding your plan, I'm with handymac, it will probably sag if installed as you describe. And drywall screws into the MDF doesn't sound strong enough even to hold it up in the long term. MDF has some wonderful qualities, but it is weak, and very heavy. For those reasons I usually employ strategies along the lines of what handymac described. For shelves, in fact, I often use 1/2" MDF with a glued-on lip and perhaps glued on undershelf support strips of 1/4" or 3/8" dimensional material. This give you the strength of real wood with the smoothness, paintability, dimensional stability and economy of the MDF. (Finding the appropriate strips of wood could be problematic if you don't have a table saw.) If you don't have a table saw, probably the best strategy is to create cleats made out of 1x2 material to support the MDF, with a 1x2x28" support connected to the front of the cleats to provide longitudinal support. Wouldn't look as good as the dado approach, but it would hold up well....See MoreBest storage for closet shelving?
Comments (11)Remove everything except the top shelf. A few inches below that, add a pair of 1"x4" boards horizontally on the side walls of the closet, front to back. Nail the boards to the wall where there are studs. (Stronger than attaching them to drywall w/o stud behind it.) Use a pair of these -- one on each board, to hang a sturdy rod for clothes hangers. https://www.amazon.com/ULIFESTAR-Stainless-Brackets-Furniture-Hardware/dp/B07RTX2H3V On each side of your hanging rod, add one of these. https://www.amazon.com/mDesign-Hanging-Organizer-Leggings-Lingerie/dp/B07J1VQ6NR Beneath each of those, you could add the large plastic bins you already have and/or a shoe rack.. Between them add one of these as wide as you need ... all the way across if you don't need space for a long coat etc. https://www.containerstore.com/s/closet/closet-accessories/lynk-double-hang-closet-rod/12d?productId=10000195 Add under bed storage, with or without the wheels. https://www.google.com/search?q=under+bed+storage+containers+with+wheels+at+walmart&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjL4onq-8XnAhUnnOAKHb0pAwUQsxh6BAgMECs&biw=1366&bih=628#spd=16154730769910609920&spf=1581302762740 Save one under bed storage bin for tennis shoes that might have a scent to them. You could add a container with a product to absorb moisture and/or smells: https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=628&tbm=shop&ei=wcRAXtqfI--kggffko-QDQ&q=box+of+baking+soda+w%2Flid+to+open+to+absorb+moisture+and+smells&oq=box+of+baking+soda+w%2Flid+to+open+to+absorb+moisture+and+smells&gs_l=psy-ab-sh.3...5174.12556.0.12738.44.44.0.0.0.0.156.3658.36j7.43.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab-sh..1.0.0....0.IeDA-w8iP0Y#spf=1581302992917 Or Downy fabric softener sheets or fabric softener pellets or moth balls or other scented product you like to help the smell. If you need to lift your bed to fit a pair of under bed storage containers beneath it, use these. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Regula-Black-Bed-Riser/937595676?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=4436&adid=22222222227289056471&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=347178922769&wl4=aud-430887228898:pla-738040478623&wl5=9011029&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=937595676&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjoLMvvvF5wIVwp6zCh0ggwMjEAQYBCABEgLMXPD_BwE...See MorePretty Closet Shelving and Clothes Rods in your closet?
Comments (11)thanks, fnmroberts, I'm looking to do something similar. it's surprisingly difficult to find a simple white shelf with a corresponding brass bracket that would fit a clothing rod. ETA, how are your shelves supported? Are those cleats? Thanks for posting all the pics! Kswl, your old closet sounds lovely, and tempts me to do a little more in my closet. But my closet organization is a little unconventional as large swaths of clothes travel with me, and are mostly arranged by to be packed or recently unpacked. So compartmentalized built-ins are not in my future. Love the crown molding idea, and I may wallpaper a back wall. Chandy for sure, once I source the shelving and poles. Thanks for reminding me there are some fun choices after the shelf and bracket hunt! I spent the day trying on my closet, which is at the moment covering up quite a bit of the bedroom floor and hanging on rolling racks. Lowes has a basic white wood shelf option, and I guess I'll be using their chrome brackets. It's not a true white, so combining other brand components may not work... It's hard to believe there isn't anything out there with a little more of a finished look......See Moreforhome0122
