What do I put on my porch when there's ice?
Comments (12)Have a little more time to expand on my earlier statement. We like to premix ice-melter and sand (which we also get at HD or Lowes in 25-lb tube-shaped bags because we don't have the space to store larger quantities, otherwise we'd buy it by the cubic yard from the landscape-supply folks that sell mulch and stuff), usually something like 4 or 5 parts sand to one part ice-melter. We keep the mix in a tightly-lidded container on the porch during the winter. At our other house we used a push-type fertilizer spreader on the long driveway, with our little parking pad and short walkways here we use a hand-cranked, hand-held spreader to get even coverage. That supplements mechanical ice removal with a tool called a "sidewalk scraper" - you use it vertically (in a butter-churning type motion) to break up the ice into chunks you can then shovel or sweep away. If you use ice melter straight up, clear away slush before it has an opportunity to refreeze (a big garage broom works really well, especially on irregular surfaces), and apply plain sand for traction in case of refreezing. I just reread your original post though, I missed "brand new" - ice melters aren't generally recommended for concrete less than one year old. Sand generously and use an ice remover tool instead. Some people use wood ash but ash + water = lye. I live in NH. We get LOTS of ice; most of the time it's from either freezing rain/sleet or snow that partially melts and refreezes. If we had had the money we'd have had those electrical cables put under the asphalt when we had the driveway put in, but we couldn't afford it. :-(...See MoreHELP arranging my bedroom! Should I put my bed in front of the window?
Comments (27)Hi everyone! Thank you so much again for your help and guidance. I thought I should pop in here for a quick update (I just hate when people post a question and never update their resolution!). It took almost 2 years but I'm finally at a good place with the bedroom decor. We ended up putting the bed up against the window because of symmetry and it also opened up a big space at the foot of the bed where we can play with our dog. We also ended up with a queen bed instead of a king. We don't mind the bed in front of the window at all. The bed has a wire headframe and barely blocks the light. We just need to hang some pictures or paintings and I think I can call the bedroom done! Thank you again for all of your wonderful suggestions and advice!...See MoreWHERE DO I PUT MY FURNITURE?!
