If you have to ask, New Dawn is the wrong rose.

I think width is sort of a meaningless descriptor when it comes to climbers as their dimensions depend on how you train them. You could make a new dawn 20 feet tall and 2 feet wide or 2 feet tall and 20 feet wide just by rearranging its canes.

Oldrosarian, I love the idea how forgiving a rose like Dawn is. That helps a lot for people like me.Definitely going on my list in future.

I mainly only take botanical photos of roses. I like to get the bud, half open and fully opened flower in the same photo. When I had a website it was for the identification of the old roses. Which as you know, don't come in many colours, so a lot may seem to look alike. My job is to show you that they may be exactly the same colour, but they can be very different from each other when looked at up close.

I am sure that because New Dawn is so forgiving, that it is part of the reason it has been around for so long.

FWIW, I haven't found New Dawn to be that cold hardy for me in zone 5. I've tried her about four times in my zone 5 garden, with successively better sources and locations, and she's never really overwintered for me, much less climbed. I once got survival over winter and some bare spindly growth all summer, but it succumbed in the next winter.

If you want suggestions for a more cold-friendly and garage-friendly climber for a zone, there are a lot of suggestions in various threads on cold zone climbers. If you've decided on New Dawn as you mentioned, you're liable to be doing a fair bit of pruning and potentially limiting how many blooms you're getting on the bush at any given time. Remember too that New Dawn is very thorny, so you'd have to be careful about driving your cars through that arch if the canes decide to escape on you.

As others have said, I think you could successfully keep it trained to the size you want and/or prune it. My neighbors have a hedge of new dawns along a short fence, planted maybe one and a half feet on center in a bed no wider than a foot. They constantly prune it and stil get a pretty good show of blooms. Tied up onto an arbor I think you'd be fine.

Oldrosarian, your New Dawn photos are beautiful! makes me want to try it again, only this time I'd definitely put it in some out-of-the-way place , where it can do what it wants. And this, in fact, is my comment to EvaElizabeth: in my climate (Tuscany, Italy, about a zone 8), this rose grew more like a rambler than a climber: long, thorny laterals all over the place; pruning it was a nightmare. I think it might work better if trained on to a wall or something, so one could keep up with the pruning in order to contain it; I grew mine more or less like a huge shrub,and it was on a path, too, in a central area,so it was ,as I said, a nightmare. Also, in a colder climate, it might not be so rambunctious, but the thorns ARE a factor to consider.

The answer to how much it can be controlled through pruning depends entirely on your level of commitment. If you are very diligent and committed you can control it...maybe. Mine needed a thorough and comprehensive pruning in February then regular hacking back as we moved into summer. It is not a rose I would put near high traffic areas. They were spectacular but too difficult as they matured to be contained. If I ever did one again it would be someplace it could sprawl.

I grow both ND (6 and counting) and 2xVQ. I find them similarly hardy and thorny! While I obviously adore ND, if you want a darker pink I HIGHLY recommend VQ.
