Car stereo options

I tend to keep my car(s) a long time and technology is continuing to move on. I cannot play any of my cassette tapes any more, and am now concerned about new cars not being able to play CDs. Do any new cars NOT have CD players?

About CDs: I took a genealogy course a couple of years ago and the instructor warned us about trying to use CDs for archival storage. It was his opinion that CDs were on their way out. Those are yet usable today, but he predicted those would go the way of 8 track tape, cassettes, and BetaMax. He thought that DVDs would last a little longer, but their future might follow the same curve as CDs, only later.

CDs and DVDs require moving parts to read or write the disc. This presents a problem for mobile equipment; It gets bumped. To combat the problem of the read head skipping a track, makers have added buffers; The playback system reads ahead and stores data in a buffer. If the head looses its place, it has time to find where it left off to begin anew provided the buffer is large enough. When this works, the user is not aware of the difficulty.

It was the instructor's opinion that new recording technology for text files and music would soon arrive and displace discs, and when it does, manufacturers will stop making disc drives. A few years after that, one can no longer read or play his discs. Based on this, I'd look for a system that uses 'thumb drives' or a version of solid state memory. As of now, discs still have a few more years, but you had said you plan for many years.

Also consider that predictions are just that; those a not guarantees of the future and can be wrong.

I feel your comments are all valid but my primary need for audio content for my car is to play recorded books from my local library. When I got my last car, I could no longer play the "books on tape", but our library has graduated to "books on CD" so I'm good (for awhile).

On a related manner, some of the product info on certain cars say that they have a back seat DVD player, with no mention of CDs. I guess that would work for playing audio CDs.

Your best bet in a used car will be a well-maintained American car. I don't want to get into the U.S./rest of the world "discussion" being held on other threads. I'll just say that proper maintenance has more to do with a car's trouble-free operation than where it is made. Right now, there are some decent American cars out there, but perception has not caught up with the reality, so American cars suffer more depreciation than many foreign cars. As a buyer of a used car, you can take advantage of that. Some of the cars you might want to look at include the Ford Taurus, or just anything midsize or larger from GM. I'm guessing that, since you got to the age of 16 without being a "gearhead," you mostly want a comfortable, reliable car. These will do the job. They shouldn't cost a fortune for insurance, either. Mikie is right -- even if you're paying for your own insurance, it will be cheaper to piggyback on your parents' policy than it will be for you to go solo. Ask about discounts if you get good grades in school or are willing to drive only a certain number of miles per month, etc. Finally, what else I wish I'd known about cars at your age? Having a car is a joy and a privilege -- and a responsibility. As a teenager, you have the benefit of quick reflexes and (I hope) formal training. You can be an excellent driver. But there's no substitute for experience -- especially at night in the rain and on icy roads. I knew how to steer out of a skid -- until the first time I found myself in one and narrowly missed a fence as I spun into a farmer's field. It's different when it really happens. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you're immortal (every teenager thinks so; so did I). You're in control of almost two tons of metal and glass and plastic, so be careful. When I was 16, nobody had cell phones and we were lucky if the car had an FM radio, nevermind multi-channel stereo systems and iPod links and the like. I know teenagers are better at multi-tasking than they used to be, but you still have one primary task in a car -- driving. Don't be distracted by fiddling with the stereo or talking with friends. It's okay to concentrate on driving. Professional auto racers do. Have fun! Getting my first car was a blast. I hope you find one you really like and have many happy miles with it.

So the main thing is to do some research (ok alot of research!) to make sure you do what is best for you and you get the best deal! One element of that is checking out the company offering the warranty (it's not the dealer and it's not the car manufacturer). Find out if they're on decent financial footing so you can expect that they'll be around for your 100,000 miles. If a third-party warranty company goes under, so does your coverage unless some other company is kind enough to pick up your coverage. Expensive and "racy" cars cost much more to insure than a family car not only because they are more expensive but because more people take risks with them. Some companies charge more for a red car, regardless of the style of car, because red cars get pulled over more often and people who may own a red car take more risks (think red sports car) You might be really surprised at which cars cost a lot more to insure. Nissan's Maxima -- not hugely expensive or racy -- costs a minor fortune to insure because of the special headlights the car has. They cost more than a thousand dollars per pair and thieves know how easy it is to pry them out of the car and use them on their own cars. And the cars stolen most frequently include older models of such relatively inexpensive family-mobiles as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry because there are so many of them out there that there is a good market for the parts the stolen car yields. Fortunately for owners of most of those cars, the loss experience of the drivers of those cars makes up at least some for the attractiveness of the parts.

I have Polk Audio, B&W, Klipsch and Bose speakers. I also have some rocks in the garden. If I had to rank them I would so as follows: 1) B&W = These were very expensive and bought about 10 years ago. They still sound great and can handle lots of power and cover all the ranges very well including lows. I don't even know if B&W still makes them or not. If they do and you don't mind spending some bucks, these are by far the best I have ever heard. These are in my Tiki hut. 2)Polk - I don't know the model other then its the top one for outdoor. They were not cheap. They sound great. They are good on the lows, but definitely can benefit from a subwoofer. These are in my outdoor kitchen. 3) Klipsch - I used these for the sub woofers outdoors and in the summer kitchen. They have held up well so far and really add to the sound quality out doors. The sub makes all the differnce in the world. 4) Rock - If your speakers are going in the yard, these are the best choice that I know of. Although, the TIC's look like they are very weather proof as well. Mine are 13yrs old now and still sound good. They have been through four hurricanes, sat in water, been peed on by my dog and God knows what else and they keep working. 5) Bose - These are also in my summer kitchen. They are the weakest of all of my speakers and definitely need a sub woofer to sound good. They are the middle of the road model but when I bought them, I don't think they were much worse then the top Bose outdoor speakers. The key I have found to good quality sound outdoors is to have the speakers face the house at an angle. This also seems to prevent a lot of the bleed over to your neighbors house as well. I don't know much about the TIC's to tell you one way or the other. One thing other thing I would recommend is a receiver that has zones or at least an A,B,A+B speaker option. This way you can turn on or off the sets you don't want on.

There is significant disappointment on our end as well as the builder that this was missed by the architect along the way. In fairness to the architect, the builder allowed us to work with the architect to develop the plans we love prior to any $ commitment from us but he did not want to pay for the survey until we were invested. So, here we are. We are disappointed because the length of the home has been established for several months and the width of the property has as well. The survey and site plan were just officially performed but the inputs are the same and have been known...so we are disappointed but still love the floorplan, location, etc. and want to make the best runner up choice we can :)

A number of newer car stereos have an auxiliary jack. Any portable CD player (or even cassette player) should be able output audio to a headphone jack which can be connected to the auxiliary in.

Also digital media can be downloaded to a smart phone a nd then played through the latest systems via bluetooth connection. Yes, the old media (like analog tape) is essentially gone but digital media can be manipulated into differnt forms without a lot of difficulty to be played by a variety of equipment.

to add to what jemdandy said many new computers do not have disc drives at all. tye use peripheral drives that connect via USB or wirelessly.
