Is she a small person? I think some of them at PB kids are kid-sized. There may also be some custom options from a place like Lee where they have things sized for women.

Of course, unupholstered also takes up less room too.

We purchased a glider. The "rocking" takes up less room, it was a piece that could fit nicely in our living room later.

Is the Ikea Poang rocker too large? Another way to get a narrow/small profile might be to find a wooden chair, like a southern porch rocker and add cushions to it. Should take up less room than something fully upholstered.

How wonderful to have a grandchild on the way - first for you? And it sounds as if they'll be close by if you're shopping together - fun times!

I am so excited at becoming a grandma! They are 38 and 39, so they are thrilled now that it looks like all is well with this pregnancy. I have bought so many books and have a huge collection of children's books already (teacher, you know!).

Thanks for all the ideas. Several might appeal to her. I suggested this morning that a porch rocker with a cushion might work since those might be smaller as far as how much room the require. The Ballard one is very nice. She might be willing to go with a shorter back if she really likes it. I love the IKEA one DLM (actually like both) and the Baxton that Kitch shared is very similar to one she liked and might work because the rockers do not extend far in the back-could be perfect. I will be buying this for them, so price point matters much less than a perfect chair for her. That said, I do love the prices here!

ETA:. Mtn, she is slim, but about 5'6". Too big for a child's chair. Good thought, though.

Rockers. They've come a long way since our children were babies, and I've sat in plenty. GET A GLIDER!! Gliders weren't around when my boys were babies & I had several rocking chairs and remember getting tired of rocking at times when baby was grumpy.

When my first grandbaby was born my DIL wanted a glider and I bought her one. We picked it out together. I wasn't sure about a glider, even when I rocked in it at the store. But that's what she wanted.

I watched the kids twice a week since birth and the glider was a Godsend. It's the motion of the glider that makes a world of difference. Very smooth and soothing, and no effort to glide. Both grandkids would fall asleep within minutes. And sometimes Grandma would too. :)

DIL had the footstool to go with the glider but it's not needed at all. We'd both trip over it.

Whatever rocker she decides on, make sure to have that thing the baby can lay on while rocking or feeding. I forget the name. It's another great invention. :)

ETA: After reading Robo's reply I wanted to say when I slept, I meant a very light catnap, never a deep sleep. Baby would be sound asleep in my arms and that's when I'd nod off. :)

One more thing, I highly recommend the rocker have built in cushioning. Not a separate cushion either. There will be nights she'll be up most of the time rocking and walking, and the built in back and bottom cushions makes it much easier on mom.

I do not know the price range but I love this one. There are a several fabric choices and it comes with a lumbar pillow.

So happy for you! How exciting. I had a rocker when my kids were babies and it had a short back. I wished so much that it had a higher back so I could rest my head against it. Agree that gliders are now preferred.

FWIW, the POANG rocker doesn’t rock very well. We had that one in dd’s Room when she was a baby and it took a lot of work to make it rock. Turns out she didn’t like being rocked anyway.

How exciting!!!! I agree with above - putting your headback, not such a good idea unless maybe you have a foot rest too. How about a nice solid wood stylish one that they may be able to pass on? I have to say. I have my great grandmothers rocking chair. if you look underneath you can see where a child drew on the bottom (it was my mother who passed 20 years ago) every time I rocked my kids in my great grandmothers chair I felt my family with me even though they were all long gone. I hope one of my kids takes it someday!

Thanks, Boopadaboo. I do have an antique family rocker, but I don't think they are interested. It has a caned seat and back, but it is just so brown that they would want to paint it-which I wouldn't mind since it would be nice to have it used. The size would certainly work. We will see.

I used a regular Ikea Poang chair to nurse both my kids. Even the non-rocker allows a little rocking motion and the arms are perfect height for holding baby and nursing. Plus they’re comfy and easy to clean and/or change cover.

I hope this isn't too rude, but do you really want to spend a $1,000 plus on a rocker/glider, which more than likely will be removed from the room in two or three years when the toys start adding up?

Also, if you order a chair online, read as many reviews as possible.

I googled best rockers and gliders and there are quite a few websites. I liked this one because it was full of reviews. MAKE SURE to read the top part of the article before they give reviews because it explaines perfectly what I was trying to say. :)

Wish the cushion came in something other than pink with the white frame-she has a white crib loaned from a friend and is doing the nursery in white and greys. I think the pink might be a nice bit of color, but she is not a fan of pink-maybe she will change her mind when she sees it! She is planning a bright rug, so maybe...

With the other, more modern rockers, I am sort of hoping that they would be moved to a family room (they are going to need to buy a bigger place within a year or two!) if we spend that kind of money on a rocker! Love the price of the one in your link-can't beat that!

I nursed 3 kids and my kids didn’t sleep through the night ever so I can say with certainty that she needs to make sure she can nurse in the rocker comfortably since she may spend hours there per week.

My mom and sister bought me a glider rocker with wood arms and no cushioning and it was torturous. I moved it out and moved in an overstuffed armchair and ottoman from my living room. However, my SIL had a cheapie glider from babies r us with a footstool that was amazing. I think the footstool is important as well for max comfort.

Dutailier makes the best rocking chair glider in my opinion, we've had several in the family and I have four of them on the porch in Maine. They have a specific style for a baby's room but it can be used anywhere. It is ergonomically correct and you can sit for hours in comfort. They even have some that recline and all come with an rocking ottoman. Congrats

I had a Dutailler glider with footstool and while they were lovely and well-made, the glider made me seasick lol! It also wasn't easy to glide when your feet are I the footstool, which also glides. I'd have preferred a Lazeboy type rocking recliner, smallish, that the child could keep or I could move into another room later. Oh, and a nursing stool. The slant of the stool is just right.

I second the recommendation for the Dutalier rocker. I bought one when I was pregnant with my first and used it for all four kids. So well-made and a complete work horse. So easy to fall asleep in it too. But that’s a lovely thing in those early twilight hours.

We are going to Buy Buy Baby on Tuesday or Wednesday to try it out.

Just wanted to let all of you know their decision. We tried out all kinds. She liked a lot of them, but they both liked the Joya best for their room. The size and style fits them and it is a little firmer than many of the others which she liked as well. They are getting it in navy.

Mtn, in re your comment about the child's rocker, there was one chair at Crate and Barrel that she tried out and her feet did not touch the floor. She looked liked Lily Tomlin as Edith Ann. I thought of you! Ha.
