Dilemma in my Den - Need Help
Comments (33)I found bookcases at a re-sale shop. The bookcases were used for display in a children's clothing boutique. Any event, I used them on either side of the sole window in my office. Using the bookcases gave a "built in" look to that particular wall. Fortunately, the bookcases were the same height as the top of the window sill. DH built a bench with storage under, placed between the bookcases under the sill for a window seat. It was a great way to achieve a built in bookcase look for very little $$. I think both bookcases cost me $50. Fortunately, the wood color was similar to that of the hardwood and trim in my office so I didn't need/want to paint them. I love the color of your walls and trim. White bookcases would certainly give you that "built in" look. If I hadn't found the second hand bookcases, I would definitely have chosen something from IKEA. Can't wait to see your "after" picture!...See MoreDen Decor Dilemma
Comments (7)Everything in the room is dark, brown or black except the area rug. It needs some color IMO and i agree with Yayagal. A beautiful painting over your mantel; your fireplace is the feature in the room so draw the eye to it. Remove the metal piece over the tv and put it elsewhere in your home. If possible I would wall mount your tv a few inches up over the console. A few colorful decor accessories from the colors in the fireplace painting would help lighten up the room, too....See MoreDesign Husbands Den
Comments (8)If he needs to manage light through the French doors, I would run drapes along that entire wall, with enough panels to get a full look. I like decorenthusiaste's suggestions for tchotchkes. If that doesn't work, maybe a shelf to the left of the window. With cupholders on the sofa, I don't think side tables are a necessity, although I think they would make the room look more balanced....See MoreFireplace design - Cottage addition design dilemma :)
Comments (8)Please ignore the 'pro' debby downer, who can't seem to say anything positive about anything. IMO! Will the paneling be vertical or horizontal? I really like the stone to the ceiling in your rendering. If you imagine what will go above the mantel (no tv but likely you will need large artwork because of the scale), if you stop the stone and do paneling above the mantel, then add art on that, you'll get a bit of a chopped up look - 3 materials (stone, wood, art) instead of just 2 (stone, art). I also think it will look nice from the upper floor to have the stone all the way up. If you hang art above the mantel, I don't think the tall stone look as imposing; above the painting will not be dominating, as your eyes will focus on the art and the fire. I've been looking for inspiration pics with cedar paneling and stone fireplaces on a vaulted wall, but they are hard to find....See Moreadoptbuffalopups
