Broccoli seedlings leggy and yellowing
Comments (6)Come to think of it, right after I fertilized for the first time is when they all started to curl up and turn yellow. The tomatoes and peppers are loving it, but the broccoli and brussels sprouts are apparently getting burnt by it. I added 1 capful of Neptune's harvest seaweed and fish fertilizer (2-3-4) and diluted it with 2 cups of water. I think that mix may have been too strong, come to think of it... Would that cause a yellow shriveling (not yellow wilting)?...See MoreGrowing Broccoli in Southern MD
Comments (9)Howdy neighbor and fellow SoMDer. I can't answer your question directly, but I can say that you don't want to let it go through frost. The high heat of our summers makes it taste pretty gross and at a certain point they become laden with tons of harlequin plant bugs. Having grown up in zone 4/5 where they do indeed grow it all summer long, I think the difference is our hot nights. In my old garden (down here) I used to harvest the big head, then pull the plants because I had small space to work with. Sounds like you may want to do the same. When I lived in Alexandria, I harvested around late May through early June, depending on the weather. Here we're averaging 5 degrees cooler, so that probably shifts things a little later. Basically when it gets hot and stays hot they will start struggling and you'll see it. Here at the new house I didn't get a good crop last spring, this spring we'll see. Hope that helps!...See MoreI have broccoli growing.
Comments (17)Thanks for your replies.Yum, in all kind of ways. Starting from a 4" pot plant to harvest, cooking and eating is very satisfying. Re the soup, it was yummy. It's a broccoli/cheddar soup. I used the stalks to make the soup. I used fat free, 100% lactose free milk, three tbs of grated sharp cheddar cheese, put it all in my blender, and instant soup. All in all, it has been a very worthwhile experiment. BTW, I'm in the process of making a (very short, 5 frame) movie with music, of the broccoli saga for our 4yo grandson. He has seen the plant in the early stages, but I want him to see the process of planting to eating....See MoreBroccoli seedlings leggy and yellowing
Comments (4)I'm having a parallel experience. My nightshades are strong and happy but my brassicas and lettuces are leggy, small, weak and not growing. I too think I've overwatered the whole crop (the surface of many cells has a white dusty covering - fungus/mold? they're growing in a "seeding mix" of peat moss, perlite, limestone and some sort of wetting agent) and I've not watered them for days and days but the "soil" still hasn't dried out. Will the plants be able to recover from this overwatering? Should I help them inside for a little while first or just get them outside ASAP for best outcome? Do I need to transplant the tomatoes/etc. inside, because of that dust on their soil? Thank you so much for your help! Regina...See MoreGail Williams
