Indoor Habeneros, my experience so far & A request for advice
Comments (3)Hi John, I'm glad you found GW... I think most of us here are starting things from seed that we transition to outdoors rather than growing to maturity under lights - you may not find anyone who has tried what you are attempting with your peppers. There is an active group with considerable experience on the Growing Under Lights forum, maybe you could find a grower there who could better answer your questions...See MoreNewbie here.........advice requested
Comments (4)For your shaded area (all perennials): Hostas!!! Epimedium Asarum (Ginger) Pulmonaria Dicentra (Bleeding Heart - I highly recommend the gold leafed variety 'Gold Heart' and any of the smaller, ever-blooming fern leaf types) Cimicifuga (any of the purple leafed varieties are especially nice...fall blooming) Ligularia (again, the purple leafed 'Brit-Marie Crawford is a favorite...lots of water for these!!) Tricyrtis (fall blooming) Helleborus Polemonium (Jacob's Ladder...'Stairway to Heaven' has colorful variegated foliage) Creeping Phlox does reasonably well in shade There are bunches of other neat shade plants, but these should be pretty easy to find locally....See MoreAnyone A Bulb Lover? I need advice
Comments (4)Well--I've gardened where it's much colder, and I've gardened down here where it's some warmer, and I gardened in about your zone in Washington State where zones can be the same as ours but gardening is wildly different, so you must take what I say with a good handful of salt. I think a lot of bulbs can be grown right in your flower beds, but be careful to mark them so you don't dig into them (as I did!). A good way is to plant something beside or even on top of them that will cover the dying foliage but not be too vigorous to crowd them out--maybe just something that comes up later. If you're growing bearded iris it would probably be as well to have them in a dedicated bed as they prefer to bake in the summer. I remember the better iris growers in Nebraska had their iris beds 'out back', as one said 'where I can just shut the gate and forget them'. I'm not sure if you'd need to pre-chill--probably not. We do, but I think you'd be enough cooler in the winter. You could ask at the Extension Service if you don't know local gardeners. I always try to make the acquaintance of good gardeners when I move, because, as you say, local gardeners have the best information. Well, except for the ones one place I lived that said I'd better learn to like plastic flowers, since that was all that would grow there. I found lots of things that grew there, and I still don't care for plastic flowers....See MoreCat with Cancer; Advice Requested
Comments (31)My almost 16 year old cat Maud was diagnosed with melanoma on the tip of her nose after a biopsy. We went to an oncologist who said surgery to remove her nose was the best shot at removing the cancer, and we would follow up with a series of cancer vaccines. She just had the surgery less than a week ago and is doing AMAZINGLY well! The surgeon was an artist and she was running around the day she came home. She stayed one night in the hospital and the techs told us she was asking for petting that night! We are so hopeful this has cleared the cancer and the surgery has not been a huge deal for our senior cat at all. She is on pain meds every 8 hours, which make her sleepy right after. The surgeon said he wished more owners considered nose removal rather than be upset by a cosmetic issue when the animal could care less how it looks. I am sharing in hopes that people will consider surgery for an older cat, depending on the type of cancer of course. My girl has amazed me with her will to live and resilience....See MoreRudebekia
