Window film for glass greenhouse
Comments (4)nomadh wrote: It seems that in San Diego I should be able to keep a greenhouse a nice warm temp all year without power. Unless you have something for storing heat like barrels of water and insulate the greenhouse with a solar pool cover the greenhouse will eventually take on the outside temperture if it stays low for any lenght of time. Greenhouses do heat up in the day time well above the outside temperture but that heat is quickly lost if not stored. Also in the summer without ventilation the tempertures can exceed 120 degrees or more. Natural ventilation is not enough unless you remove the sidewalls and have roof vents and a very good shade cloth. You also will need some way to circulate the air for the health of the plants and the tortise. Do you plan on using solar fans? With good insulation and heat storage you should be able to gain 5 or 6 degrees which would be ok as long as you don't go below 40 outside....See MoreTinting Windows - Does it really help?
Comments (7)texasredhead you need to pay attention what I said. I never said the only purpose of Low E windows is for keeping the heat in. Low E windows are better then clear windows but if you think window film don't improve your Low E windows you are mistaken. Look at the numbers. I have installed film on several Low E windows and all it does is improve your UV protection and lowers your electric bill. Find someone with a UV meter and a solar meter and compare a Low E window and a window with film, no comparison. I know I do it ever day. Also make sure it is a reputable window film dealer there is like with anything else good film and cheap film....See MoreWindow Film suggestions
Comments (20)As I type, the installers are finishing up tinting 4 windows. I love the look of them. It is a bit like looking through lightly tinted Polaroid sunglasses. I asked them about placing it on the inside, which they did, and he told me that it was only dark tints that stood a chance of harming seals in windows. He said that it isn't uncommon for seals to eventually go in windows, and if they do they will replace the film at no cost. The product is 3M and their card says www.coolsunlight.com....... I got estimates from 2 places and found out something interesting. The first company gave me the estimate and added some $240 in taxes. The second told me that there is no tax on window film since it is energy saving and non-taxable! I know there are two, or more, levels of protection and one of them is "low E". If you use that one, you might be eligible for up to $500 rebate through your electric company. Time will tell how these work out but I hope what little I've learned is helpful....See MoreWindow Tint, (FWIW)
Comments (2)I work in the building supply industry, albeit up north at the opposite side of our country, and nobody puts in windows with "clear" glass anymore, no more than anyone uses single panes of glass these days. Since 1983, windows have been manufactured with insulated glass units that are designed to to save on energy costs of both heating and cooling, and to reduce UV damage to home interiors. I doubt many people on these forums who grow in natural light have plants getting the full spectrum of sunlight through their windows - unless they live in a an old home with the original windows, pre-1980's. Low-E glass is fine for houseplants. Here is an article I found on the web (and there are many) dealing with the subject of modern windows and house plants and explains it quite nicely: does-low-e-glass-affect-houseplants That said, perhaps you are talking about an aftermarket additional film or tint applied to the inside of the glass? In that case, only the manufacturer of your particular product could tell you how much of the solar spectrum it removes. If you think it is cutting out more than you want for your plants, why not add a small source of artificial light and see if it makes the difference you are looking for?...See Moresuevermeulen
