Kryptonite and Autopilot Plants
Comments (16)I donâÂÂt have any âÂÂKryptoniteâ plants, but if I had a larger property, I could definitely have one with roses. I have childhood memories of a few enchanting old rose gardens that propel me in that direction. But I did get the âÂÂfrugalâ gene and I would have a hard time paying unreasonable prices for a plant, even if I really wanted it. âÂÂAutopilotâ plants, maybe. I automatically look for epimedium, ferns, hellebores, bleeding hearts, tiarellas and I add some every year. I donâÂÂt feel guilty about it though, because I still have plenty of shady spots that need those plants. IâÂÂm starting to be automatic with clematis too. Clematis though, are hard to collect, since you have to have vertical support for them. I also love trees and if I had a large property, I would be buying a lot of trees and having a wonderful time doing it. Our family had a property that had a 50 year old copper beech on it, it was massive! Loved it. IâÂÂve added bulbs most years, but now IâÂÂm having to try different kinds because IâÂÂm almost out of room for more daffodils. I tried Leucojum for the first time this year, and excited to see how those will work out in spring....See MoreThese are a few of my favorite things.
Comments (146)I'm bringing this thread back, because I mistakenly called one of my favorite things "lemon coral sedum". It is actually called "[Sedum japonicum Tokyo Sun[(https://www.houzz.com/products/sedum-japonicum-tokyo-sun-stonecrop-prvw-vr~30937770)", although my nursery labeled it "De Oro". It is a bright chartreuse color and has a low mounding habit. Unfortunately, it's more tender than other sedums. It did fine when temps reached 27 degrees Fahrenheit in my garden, but is listed as only hardy to zone 8. It has shallow roots that pull out of the ground easily, so I don't consider it "walk-able", but it seems to recover when I accidentally step on it....See MoreMito-no-Hana
Comments (24)I would say growing it in a pot would help keep it tightly clumped. This one is a late riser for me. I was sad thinking it did not make any new eyes this year. then one then another..total of 4 this year. I was confused due to the distance they were apart. Elongated rhizomes is a good term. It makes it look funny with the gap in between each plant but none the less a great hosta. I will take a follow up pic mine is VERY yellow and looking kind of wild right now. it seems to keep the more pure vein lines in more shade. In sun it gets the really crazy coloring....See MoreHosta M 2017
Comments (53)You guys got me interested in looking back on colors of hosta May. I bought it in 2006 from Hosta Choice nursery. They never made a mistake in their plants that I am aware of. I think it must have something to do with the light and sun levels. The first couple years it was in half day sun. Looking back at pictures it stayed creamy yellow. 2009 spring 2009 fall in it's permanent location in 2012 it looks like it turned blue by June in 2015 it was blue again in sept. The only thing I can think of is that is dependent on light. The unearthly turquoise color has always appealed to me with this plant. It has great color through the whole season. Here it is in 2016 (I didn't take may pictures this year)....See MoreEsther-B, Zone 7a
