Bathroom - help w/ paint direction please
Comments (75)Lori - Actually I was looking at that color today online. Long story short, I normally use Ace Royal paint but they don't carry it anymore and I don't like the new stuff. I considered heading to another place to look at color chips. I do plan on using BM paint for the bathroom but was hoping for something decent but cheaper for the bedroom but who to match the paint...? So anyhow, yeah, I'd love to see a sample of the H. Butterscotch!...See MoreIsland Advice please
Comments (9)Thanks cpang for measuring that! lascatx, the side that I would add the overhang does not have anything facing out...meaning no drawers, cabinets, etc. I have a sink, microwave cab, and drawers on the other side. If I add the overhang I "might" put a backless barstool there just for me when I might be hanging out in the kitchen. I don't intend for that to be real seating. I could also add some 12" deep cabs (or something) but I'm not sure if that is in the budget. If I add the overhang to the back, I could "hide" the stool or the trashcan in that space. Again, I could add a 12" something. (I know if won't really be hidden) I think I like the overhang for a couple of different reasons. 1)barstool 2)trash 3)I think the overhang looks like it is more "open". Thanks for asking. These questions are exactly what I wanted to think through this or if somebody else had a different way to look at this....See MoreIsland size and layout help
Comments (27)Thank you everyone....I'm just getting more conflicted, LOL! Front door- I would generally not have an issue with re-directing traffic through our living room, through our family room and into the kitchen OR, through the dining room BUT, the front door is my natural light source to my kitchen. Above my front door is a very large 2 story window. The front of the house is south facing and lets all of the light in. I almost always have my door open and I have a full glass storm door. My kitchen is otherwise very dark and depressing. I'm hoping the white cabs will perk it up. I just can't see taking away that light. I could do a transom I suppose, but it won't be as bright. I also have a new front door on order. It is a 3/4 light seeded glass door. Similar to this just not as ornate in the leading. I thought it would be a nice thing to look at from my kitchen, but also offer privacy and let in light. If I were to incorporate some kind of pocket door by the desk area, I would still have the light issue, unless the door was opaque glass. It would still filter out light but not as much. Also, my 1/2 bath is in the entry hallway so the kids are in and out of there all day long, I don't think it would ever get shut. The other consideration I have is that we have plans to add on a room behind the kitchen where our deck currently sits. It would be a sunroom of sorts and be entered where the door to the deck is now. I could include a casual dining area in here, but this is a few years out. The island to table option is appealing to me. It would allow me to still have a "table" but keep the traffic flow into the new family entrance wide open. Co-Co Your island is beautiful. It is perfect in that your seating area is at one end while useable counter space for prepping is at the other end. Could you tell me the dimensions of your island? One other consideration I have is eliminating the desk and creating a seating area there- we could do a built in bench with a long narrow table. I would need to shrink the island down but I may be an option....See Moretwo sizes for islands? schematic included.
Comments (35)If you do that ceiling, plz promise you will do pics! There's a kind of practical relationship between a sink, ref and cooking surface. I think it extends to a much lesser extent to an oven for most people. There's another smaller one between something like a drinks ref, glasses and ice! (some days, add vodka and vermouth). There's a definite relationship between dishes, dining and cleanup. Which is a way of saying, I think you could move the range to the "baking" area, but you might need to move the ref and I don't know how to do that. The ovens can move fairly easily to where the ref is. The thing about windows and crossing them with something like a cooking surface is way dependent on your local codes. This envisions pulling it 6 to 12 inches away from the window itself - it hard to calculate anything else with sketches. Your local codes may not allow it. Mine would allow any placement over 3 inches beyond the sill. The cooking surface placement is difficult on the little south wall. Lots of clearance issues, cross traffic and lack of counters. So, in jill-world, if you mostly do pick-up style eating, I would do a table, ref, dishes and cleanup on the east side, prep and cooking on the west side. I might try a peninsula design - to make a better relationship between range, ref and a sink. If you mostly eat in the dining room, I would try to resolve very real issues with the cooker placement. Mostly, I think my advice would be to live with the drawings and the comments a little while - see if you have new thoughts for a different design, and then chart out what you want, how much a given placement satisfies it and what its bigger benefits and defects are - including the money guestimates. Sounds cold doesn't it? I have become very jaded about love, having been let down by a series of ranges. Sometimes, the most lovely choices bust up with you; the relationship just doesn't work in the long run. I seem to have this thing for truly terrible ranges. :o) Good luck and happy choosing!...See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
