According to the Royal Horticultural Society, "Unlike botanical and cultivar names, common names are governed by no international rules." However, their recommendation is "...to print them always in Roman type, with lower case initial letters except when the word is a geographical or personal name." That said, I stand edified, with my kumquats pickled, and will swear off the use of single quotes for common names. Recommended Style for Printing Plant Names P.S. I am not going to begin using italics for botanical names, however.

If the colour of the fruit (not petals) is accurately reproduced in the photo it is rather a pale pink for E europaeus. They are usually a more shocking pink colour. They are prettily sprinkled through our hedges at this time of year.

It looks like a black cherry to me, too, although the leaves are less elongated than mine. It might be a choke cherry -- their berries are more purplish than black and the leaves are shorter. Some black cherries are better than others. Mine is quite good, but no matter what you make out of it, it's hard to shake the feeling you are eating cough syrup. You may want to post these pictures in the Tree forum, and add a pictures of the bark as well as the full tree. Wild cherries are a common tree throughout the east coast.

Only you can determine what those pipes are for. They could be part of an irrigation system, or the remnants of some sort of water feature in the area. From the picture that seems to be rocks around the pipe which could be an indicator of a water feature. The caped pipe could be the water feed, and the open pipe from a pump. Is there a pump box or remnants of what could be a pump box in the area? Have you tried to remove the cap from the one pipe. What happens would be an indication of what it was used for. Have you identified all of the faucet and valves in your house, garage, or other buildings. Any water feature or irrigation system will have a valve or faucet so it can be shut off. I doubt the pipe in the picture was used for anything other that water because of its diameter. Is the capped pipe the same size? There is one exception to that above. We once lived in a house that had the pipes and other remnants of a moonshine still. If you are in an addition, it would be pretty exposed for that kind of activity.
