Window trim - Need to decide quickly

Some parts of our house have elaborate trim details, but most of the windows don't have trim. The main areas such as dining room, living room, master bedroom have crown molding, window trim etc but the windows in rest of the rooms don't have trim. It's time for us to get shades for windows and I need to decide about the trim. I lined up a contractor and was supposed to place the order for the material today but I'm having second thoughts and postponed it to tomorrow.

Am I going to ruin the look by adding trim to these family room windows? I'm not worried about adding trim to other windows, but this room is making me nervous. Would the windows look bulky with trim?

Window and door trim, as well as base and ceiling moldings, need to be done properly and proportionately. You will need a good idea of the correct proportions, and a good trim carpenter to install it. It is costly to do correctly, and you may want to research the style that fits your house, as well as the budget to add trim. If you don't have the time and budget to do it well, then forgo the trim and just install outside mounted window treatments, which will cover the area completely.

Here is the nook area adjacent to the family room. I've decided on getting trim to these windows as they look bare when the shades are pulled down. We're going to change the shades to woven ones.

I personally think if u are going to add curtains, then u can go without the trim.

The window trim change would be to Craftsman style. Unless you are doing the work yourself it seems a lot of expense for little difference on upstairs windows. It would, however, be extremely easy to do on your front door as you would only need to change the top board. And you could replace the side lights with solid wood inserts, or you could use textured glass that would obscure the view while still letting light in. While the limestone exterior is very light it has a yellow hue. Simply speaking the easiest way to find colors that work with the warm limestone is to choose a nearby color. That was probably why the trim is green. Since you prefer a modern look, I suggest you keep your siding light and use color only in the trim. Below are two combinations that I like. I have never had much luck painting vinyl and I als dislike shingle look siding on most houses , I also really hate those arched windows they in no way suit the house either do the shutters. The advantage to going new siding is you can close off those arches at the same time with a bit of work. I love grayed green siding is woodsy areas it seems to just blend in , then some landscaping to get rid of the bushes that are really not good where they are , all of them are hiding both the house and the entry. If you go that color then just do a gray roof and of course the new windows with no grids . Is that a window that looks like it is boarded up next to the front door?The windows IMO should all match and those weird little tops on some need to go

Homebody - No window treatments in the family room. At least as of now. We might get woven shades later. We are just going to add shades to the other rooms now.

Diana Bier Interiors - We are going to use trim that is similar to the one we already have in the dining room. I'm going to be working with a good finish carpenter and budget is not an issue.

I do not want the windows to be covered. I want them to be highlighted more :) Privacy is not an issue and we like the views.

I am planning to do a similar thing. I'm surprised by the elaborate trim in some areas and none in others of your home. I don't have any window trim and the house just seems unfinished. I do know that my trim carpenter (friend, thank goodness) is going to have to take out the apron and sill and add new, bigger in order to balance the casing and surround. I hope your guy figured on that as well. Good luck.

Yes, Lexi, your views are just beautiful--I understand your not wanting to cover them! So installing trim that is consistent throughout the house would be a very good idea.

Yes get the trim that matches the trim you have and you'll be happy. Personally I like it the way it is.
