Mandarin Lights

Bought these at Lowes as sticks about a month ago. My first experience with the Northern Lights series so I’m hoping they do great!

They will get 3-4 hours of afternoon sun.

I covered the soil with mulch.

I have some Encores planted in full sun and they looked good for maybe 2 weeks before they succumed to the summer heat/sun.

They look nice. Are they fragrant?

Full sun doesn’t work here for “full sun” azaleas either. I usually put them in shade and move them into dappled shade/sun if they seem like they need it. Most are perfectly happy here in full shade.

Is there a place where you can maybe move those pots to morning sun instead? My azaleas and rhodies do best with a bit of morning sun, then shade the rest of the day, when possible.

The radiant heat from concrete and brick would kill poor azaleas here... but maybe it’s different here with the dry heat?

They have no fragrance from what I can tell. Once the whole bush blooms I will check more closely and report back!

That’s a good reminder about the heat of the concrete, had not thought about that.

Its not practical for me to move them to morning sun, but I can probably keep them cooler with less sun exposure by moving them just a few feet when I get home from work.

I think I will have to try that plus regular light waterings once summer hits.

I can say that the heat out west feels much more like I’m baking in an oven. As opposed to here where I feel like I’m being boiled alive. Not sure if the dry heat holds onto the masonry worse or not.

Rhodyman - I made a mistake. I want to plant it on the north west-side of the house. Will this be okay? Morning shade and afternoon sun. Also, thankyou for explaing the benefits of peat moss to me. I thought peat moss kept the soil moist but my soil is already moist. Okay, I will add some peat moss to the hole when I plant my Mandarin Lights tomorrow. My soil is acidic. The nursery where I purchase all my plants, is going to give me all the pine needles I need for my rhodies and azaleas. They just told me to bring my own bag. lol Oh yes, my bed is definitely raised and on a slope. I will much with composted bark mulch. Okay, here's a dumb question??? Do you put the pine needles on first or the bark mulch? Again, thank you for all your help.

With proper soil conditions, the Northern Lights series do fine in full sun in middle TN. After a year or two in those pots they will not be happy campers, they grow far too big for a pot that size. Get them into the ground.

KennsWoods off topic, but would you happen to know how Candy Lights does in warmer climates, like my hot and dry Northern California? Do they actually need the chill of lower temps, or just tolerate it? Where I have them, in the ground, near the house, they won’t get any frost. But, they will have great conditions for most azaleas/rhodies as long as they don’t need frost. Thanks!

Thanks kennswoods, I will probably replace some struggling azaleas with these this year.

CoriAnn, they still have no scent from what I can tell.

I had moved these inside overnight- wasn’t sure if the snow would wilt the petals.
