Partial shade like you have is very good.

Peat moss serves two purposes. Azaleas like well drained acidic soil. Most peat mosses are acidic and acidify the soil. They also loosen up the soil, helping provide good drainage. They will die if they are kept in too moist an area. In areas with poor drainage, a raised bed is used to provide good drainage. Raised beds are also good in areas with alkaline soil. The raised bed is made up of good well drained acidic soil. Be sure to mulch. Peat moss is not a mulch. It is a soil amendment. A mulch is something like pine needles or shredded pine bark.

Rhodyman - I made a mistake. I want to plant it on the north west-side of the house. Will this be okay? Morning shade and afternoon sun. Also, thankyou for explaing the benefits of peat moss to me. I thought peat moss kept the soil moist but my soil is already moist. Okay, I will add some peat moss to the hole when I plant my Mandarin Lights tomorrow. My soil is acidic. The nursery where I purchase all my plants, is going to give me all the pine needles I need for my rhodies and azaleas. They just told me to bring my own bag. lol

Oh yes, my bed is definitely raised and on a slope. I will much with composted bark mulch.

Do you put the pine needles on first or the bark mulch?

Most people only use pine needles or bark, not both. Since you have both, I would put the pine needles down first since they tend to decompose and help the soil. Bark mulch is fairly stable and is slow to decompose.

Your location should be just fine. Deciduous azaleas are tough.

I just came home with my 3 bags of pine needles. Curious to know though, how much should I sprinkle around each rhododendron? I'm sorry, I forgot to ask that question.

A mulch layer should be about 2 to 3" deep. The mulch should not be directly against the trunk of the plants. It should be back an inch or two.
